A rethinking of the archetypal time travel story! Time machines are uncomplicated things. In hundreds of science fiction stories, they have slipped defiantly into the past or slid silently into the future. You know where you are with a time machine. They go forward. They go back. Unless you get caught in a loop. Then you have a problem. Then you’re repeating the same day over and over again. But you’re a resourceful kind of guy; you figure out a way to break the loop. It’s going to take a little time, but you figure time is the one thing you can afford to lose. Then you discover time machines don’t always go forward and back. Sometimes they go sideways.

Based on Ernest J. Gaines’ National Book Critics Circle Award–winning novel, A Lesson Before Dying is set in a small Louisiana Cajun community in the late 1940’s.  Jefferson, a young illiterate black man, is falsely convicted of murder and is sentenced to death. The disheartened Wiggins had once harbored dreams of escaping from his impoverished youth, yet he returned to his home town after university, to teach children whose lives seemed as unpromising as Jefferson’s. Shakespeare’s most imaginative and merry play is set in an enchanted wood amidst fairies and sprites. When Oberon, King of the Fairies, uses his magic upon four runaway lovers in a midsummer wood outside Athens, chaos ensues. Who really loves whom? Meanwhile, a band of well-meaning but bungling local actors have their rehearsal sabotaged by the mischievous Puck, who bewitches their leader, Bottom, and Titania, the Fairy Queen. The result is a lively and anarchic comedy which can only be resolved by an elaborate disentangling of spells. Hermia is played by Amanda Root, Oberon by David Harewood, and Bottom by Roy Hudd.

The Folger Shakespeare Library, home to the world’s largest Shakespeare collection, brings A Midsummer Night’s Dream to life with this new full-length, full-cast dramatic recording of its definitive Folger Edition. In A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Shakespeare stages the workings of love in unexpected ways. In the woods outside Athens, two young men and two young women sort themselves into couples—but not before they form first one love triangle, and then another. The king and queen of fairyland, Oberon and Titania, battle over custody of an orphan boy. Oberon uses magic to make Titania fall in love with a weaver named Bottom, in an effort to distract Titania from the custody battle. While all of this is going on, Bottom and his companions ineptly stage the tragedy of “Pyramus and Thisbe.” This new full-cast recording—based on the most respected edition of Shakespeare’s classic—expertly produced by the Folger Theatre, is perfect for students, teachers, and the everyday listener.
