From the celebrated author of You Too Can Have a Body like Mine, a thought-provoking, often unsettling story collection that consists, broadly, of narrative diagrams of the three main stages in a human life: birth, life, and death. Alexandra Kleeman’s debut novel You Too Can Have a Body like Mine earned her comparisons to Thomas Pynchon, Don DeLillo, Ben Marcus, and Tom Perrotta. It was praised by the New York Times as “a powerful allegory of our civilization’s many maladies, artfully and elegantly articulated, by one of the young wise women of our generation.” In her second book, a collection of twelve stories irresistibly seductive in their strangeness, she explores human life from beginning to end: the distress of birth into a world already formed; the brief and confusing period of “living” where we understand what is expected of us and struggle to do it; and the death-y period toward the end where we sense it is ending and will end only partially understood, at best. The title is taken from one of the stories (“Intimation”), but is also a play on Wordsworth’s “Intimations of Immortality”—only in this case it’s not clear exactly what is being intimated, but it’s nothing so gleaming and good as Immortality. The middle, “Living” section of the book, is fleshed out with a set of stories that borrow more from traditional realist fiction to illustrate the inner lives of the characters. At once familiar and mysterious, these stories have an eerie resonance as its characters find themselves in new and surprising situations. An unnamed woman enters a room with no exit and a ready-made life; the disappearance of people, objects, and memory creates an apocalypse; the art of dance is used to try to tame a feral child; the key to surviving a house-party lies in knowing the difference between fake and real blood. Elegant, surprising, wondrous, and haunting, Intimations is an utterly transporting collection from one of our most ingenious and brilliant young writers.

Herbert George Wells (1866 – 1946) was a prolific English writer, now best remembered for his science fiction novels, classics as The Time Machine and War of the Worlds. The Diamond Maker is about a gentleman’s strange encounter with a vagabond who claims he has found a way to synthesize diamonds! This science fiction staple serves as a conflicted investigation into greed and capitalism. One hot steamy night in London, on a bridge looking over the Thames, a gentleman meets what appears to be a vagabond. The drifter, though looking ragged, has some class about him, and tells a story of being very successful in business. The gentleman is at first amused and then amazed when the vagrant pulls from around his neck a bag of very large diamonds. He tells the frustrating tale of learning how to carve the stones after years of sacrifice and practice only to find them impossible to sell because he is suspected of arson and is being sought after by the police.

Life brings along with it many stories waiting to be heard. And I too have heard many real life incidents from friends, family, and others. Incidents which then would linger in my mind, far too long, and take paths, far too adventurous. It was not long before I started to write down these stories and narrate them into an audiobook, to turn real life episodes into fiction. The whole process of masking as another character, letting loose the creative possibilities, working with music was an unforgettable learning experience. There is always something to learn from others. Real in Reel is all about reflections from the strange, small, or big experiences of many in the most delightful manner. These stories have also had a great impact on my outlook in life. Occasionally I would find looking at my stories from a different point of view, so as to add more details and flavor to the situations and characters and, overtime I internalized these habits to my circumstances. It was not my will, but of those stories that have made themselves heard through me and led me to create this audiobook. I thank the many inspirations for this book and my father the most.

The idea of this book struck me as I was reading the daily newspapers. I found a column in which amazing real life incidents were stated - such as a man living in an unusual place, jewelry mysteriously disappearing, miracles taking place and many other strange yet interesting things. I liked these incidents so much that I couldn’t stop thinking about the various possibilities in which they would lead to and so I started to jolt them into words. I was surprised as I completed my first story within an hour, though fast it was only a couple of hundred words and so I challenged myself to write 15 such very short stories. These very short stories are filled with adventure, action, irony, tragedy and humor. Each story has its own world, language and shows the readers that this is the way of life and how it should be cherished. Toughest part was to give a name to this collection of very short stories, since they are so varied and could not be clubbed or categorized, frankly speaking I am not sure even now. The longest one among the collection stood out so I suggested calling the book by its name “An Evening with Lady Luck” I would like to thank my parents and my mentor Mr. Curtis Peter Van Gorder for making this audio book materialize in your hands; I hope this audio book helps you as it has helped me. ----- Shreyans Ranjalkar

Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award finalist Joy Williams has a one-of-a-kind gift for capturing both the absurdity and the darkness of everyday life. In Ninety-Nine Stories of God, she takes on one of mankind’s most confounding preoccupations: the Supreme Being. This series of short, fictional vignettes explores our day-to-day interactions with an ever-elusive and arbitrary God. It’s the Book of Common Prayer as seen through a looking glass—a powerfully vivid collection of seemingly random life moments. The figures that haunt these stories range from Kafka (talking to a fish) to the Aztecs, Tolstoy to Abraham and Sarah, O. J. Simpson to a pack of wolves. Most of Williams’ characters, however, are like the rest of us: anonymous strivers and bumblers who brush up against God in the least expected places or go searching for him when he’s standing right there. The Lord shows up at a hot-dog-eating contest, a demolition derby, a formal gala, and a drugstore, where he’s in line to get a shingles vaccination. At turns comic and yearning, lyric and aphoristic, Ninety-Nine Stories of God serves as a pure distillation of one of our great artists.
