A legendary gunslinger wields his deadly .44 in this classic Western. Dan Harland was a legend. A hired gun, Harland had earned a reputation as one of the fastest gunslingers in the West. He didn’t like to kill, but he did it with deadly accuracy. The money wasn’t too bad, either. However, when he is hired to kill a man who is seemingly all too ready to die, Harland begins to have second thoughts about his occupation and seeks out the shadowy figure who hired him.

The people of San Angela had no idea Mill Roth left his cattle empire to a woman by the name of Hattie Stamps, the widow of Beaver Stamps, who was Mill’s oldest and best friend. Until she showed up claiming the Roth Empire, everything was fine. Some of the citizens, other cattle operators, and people of high standing were filing section claims and branding cattle as fast as they could be caught. Plat Hargis and Floyd Sutter, both wealthy cattle and land owners, were claiming the largest chunks of the properties. Unbeknown to everyone, another group of men was working quietly to get it all. Lank Lankford, the new sheriff of the town, was caught in the middle. He had left New Mexico and his old friend Hawk Haynes to take the job. He soon realized he would need his old friend’s help. Hawk Haynes rounded up some of his men and left right away, knowing he had his own problems. A gunslinger by the name of Moody Rim was looking to make a reputation; killing the great Hawk Haynes would do that. His way of choice would be shooting Hawk in the back and telling it differently. When Hawk arrives in San Angela, the number of people wanting him and Sheriff Lankford dead increases rapidly. Too many people stood to lose fortunes if Hattie’s will was determined legal. Hattie was tough and unlike any woman anyone had ever met. She spoke her mind and was uninhibited. She had enough men to start a war of any size called for, but she wanted to do things the right way if possible. She decided to play along with Sheriff Lankford and Hawk Haynes. In the doing of it all, Hawk discovers something about himself. A man with a reputation carries a fear of being shot in the back; to his surprise, that isn’t his worse fear at all.

Classic Western adventure from America’s favorite storyteller Louis L’Amour Louis L’Amour brings you the Wild West as you’ve never heard it before. This classic story, complete with a full cast, stirring music, and authentic sound effects, sweeps listeners back to the rough and tumble days of the old West—when men put their lives on the line for the sake of honor, and truth and justice were fought on the open plain. A dusty stranger comes into the town of Boquilla in search of a drink after many hard weeks riding the trails. He enters the saloon, and within minutes the town bully is dead on the floor. Who is the stranger? Is he John Wesley Hardin? Or the legendary Marshal Kilkenny? Speculation and admiration run through the town like wildfire. To show their gratitude, the townsfolk persuade the stranger to stay awhile. All the free whiskey he can drink and the finest hotel room in town are only the beginning of the good life for this man, more accustomed to the cold hard ground and meals of greasy bacon and biscuits. The attractions of the dangerous stranger are also irresistible to the pretty young women in town. But the stranger’s luck cannot continue. Someone suspects that he is not who he pretends to be. After all, according to legend, Kilkenny always leaves town after killing the bad guy. Why would he stick around this time?

Early in Louis L’Amour’s career, he wrote a number of novel-length stories for “pulp” western magazines. “I lived with my characters so closely that their lives were still as much a part of me as I was of them long after the issues in which they appeared went out of print,” he said. “I wanted to tell the reader more about my people and why they did what they did.” So he revised and expanded these magazine works to be published again as full-length novels. Here is one of his early creations, which have long been a source of great speculation and curiosity among his fans. A Man Called Trent opens on nester Dick Moffitt lying dead where he was killed by King Bill Hale’s riders. His son Jack and adopted daughter Sally, who witnessed the murder, go for safety to a cabin owned by a man called “Trent”—an alias for Kilkenny, who is seeking to escape his reputation as a gunfighter.
