A renowned psychologist and expert on human behavior presents Emotional Agility—a proven approach to unhook from negative feelings and behaviors so you can lead a healthier, more fulfilling life. Whether it’s getting ahead at work, becoming a more patient parent or partner, or losing that pesky ten pounds, we all have things we want to achieve in life. And yet, despite our good intentions, we often get tripped up by self-defeating habits and emotions. Why do some people succeed in reaching their loftiest goals while the rest stumble? In Emotional Agility, Susan David provides the revolutionary answer to this question. Challenging the popular belief that positive thinking is the key to fulfillment, she explains that negative thoughts and feelings are normal. Negativity doesn’t derail emotionally agile people. Instead, they know how to unhook from, accept, and harness these experiences so they can focus on what really matters. Drawing on more than twenty years of research and the latest insights from behavioral science, David shows that being emotionally agile is not about suppressing negative emotions or fixing “bad” behavior; instead, it’s about facing our inner selves with courage and compassion, identifying and acting on our values, and remaining curious and engaged with the world around us. Written with wit and empathy, Emotional Agility is a groundbreaking guide that proves we don’t need to be perfect to reach our full potential.

A #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER One of the most salient features of our culture is that there is so much bullshit. Everyone knows this. Each of us contributes his share. But we tend to take the situation for granted. Most people are rather confident of their ability to recognize bullshit and to avoid being taken in by it. So the phenomenon has not aroused much deliberate concern. We have no clear understanding of what bullshit is, why there is so much of it, or what functions it serves. And we lack a conscientiously developed appreciation of what it means to us. In other words, as Harry Frankfurt writes, “we have no theory.” Frankfurt, one of the world’s most influential moral philosophers, attempts to build such a theory here. With his characteristic combination of philosophical acuity, psychological insight, and wry humor, Frankfurt proceeds by exploring how bullshit and the related concept of humbug are distinct from lying. He argues that bullshitters misrepresent themselves to their audience not as liars do, that is, by deliberately making false claims about what is true. In fact, bullshit need not be untrue at all. Rather, bullshitters seek to convey a certain impression of themselves without being concerned about whether anything at all is true. They quietly change the rules governing their end of the conversation so that claims about truth and falsity are irrelevant. Frankfurt concludes that although bullshit can take many innocent forms, excessive indulgence in it can eventually undermine the practitioner’s capacity to tell the truth in a way that lying does not. Liars at least acknowledge that it matters what is true. By virtue of this, Frankfurt writes, bullshit is a greater enemy of the truth than lies are.

How Could You Do That?! illustrates Dr. Laura Schlessinger's philosophy of personal responsibility through her usually provocative but always stimulating moral dialogues with callers about everyday ethical dilemmas. In her lively pull-no-punches style, Dr. Laura takes on the moral dilemmas of our time: from the mindless pursuit of pleasure and immediate gratification to taking the easy way out when those actions produce ugly or uncomfortable life-altering consequences. She demonstrates in no uncertain terms that personal values are never someone else's responsibility but your own, and why choosing not to honor them actually compounds unhappiness. Finally, she explains that by disciplining self-indulgence and rising above temptation we can discover the infinite pleasures, the true happiness, of the moral high ground. Dr. Laura delivers not only a compelling argument for an ethical approach to life but also an invaluable inspiration to rebuilding character, conscience, and courage. Here is a work that can make a genuine difference in the quality of your own life and the lives of those we love.

In Obsession, John Douglas once again takes us fascinatingly behind the scenes, focusing his expertise on predatory crimes, primarily against women. With a deep sense of compassion for the victims and an uncanny understanding of the perpetrators, Douglas looks at the obsessions that lead to rape, stalking, and sexual murder through such cases as Ronnie Shelton, the serial rapist who terrorized Cleveland; and New York's notorious "Preppie Murder." But Douglas also looks at obsession on the other side of the moral spectrum: his own career-long obsession with hunting these predators. Douglas shows us how we can all fight back and protect ourselves, our families, and loved ones against the scourge of the violent predators in our midst. The first step is insight and understanding, and no one is better qualified to penetrate Obsession than John Douglas.

Beloved spiritual teacher, poet, and philosopher Mark Nepo returns to the inspiring short-chapter format of his #1 New York Times bestseller, The Book of Awakening, to map an insightful and resilient path for inhabiting the soul by engaging in the world.Mark Nepo has been called “one of the finest spiritual guides of our time,” “a consummate storyteller,” and “an eloquent spiritual teacher.” With the rare ability to communicate stirringly profound truths directly to each individual heart, Mark inspires audiences of more than 15,000 people as well as small, intimate groups. Now, in The One Life We’re Given, Nepo’s personal stories, questions, and meditations take us on a deep and uplifting journey to know our own hearts and enliven our souls. “In order to fully live the one life we’re given,” Nepo writes, “we each must affirm how precious this one life is and open ourselves to loving whatever life puts before us. Whether that is suffering, pain, fear or loss, or surprise, beauty, love or wonder, we work to stay in touch with our hearts in order to make sense of our experience. As we learn when to try and when to let go, when to give our all and when to surrender and simply receive, we unfold the moments that reveal meaning and ready us for grace. This is how the heart breaks a path to our soul’s work, leading us to our authenticity, and to how we can be useful to others and the world.” By illuminating the art of finding and restoring what matters and by exploring the craft of awakening, The One Life We’re Given affirms our purpose as not just to stay alive but to stay in our aliveness.

In this wise and informative parenting guide, Elaine Rose Glickman shows listeners how loving your kid enough to be the boss will result in happier, healthier, and much easier-to-be-around children. You’ve seen them—kids running wild through restaurants while the parents avert their gaze and order another cappuccino. You’ve heard them—kids telling their parents to “shut up” and “get me that.” You’ve met them—kids who dress inappropriately, roll their eyes, and never say “thank you.” Maybe one of those kids belongs to you. Combining incisive commentary with grounded, practical advice, Your Kid’s a Brat and It’s All Your Fault will have you recognizing and laughing at yourself, your fellow parents, and a culture that seems determined to turn our precious angels into not-so-precious brats. Divided into three sections—“Your Budding Brat” for toddlers and preschoolers, “Your Bratty Child” for grade-schoolers, and “Your Bratty Tween”—this book is packed with wisdom and tips culled from the trenches of child-rearing. Your Kid’s a Brat and It’s All Your Fault will help you grow adept at responding to specific misbehavior and will encourage and empower you to become the confident, respected parent you yearn to be.
