Dave Sanchez (aka The Gecko) and his pet gecko (aka Sticky) are back in their fourth dangerous encounter with the dastardly treasure hunter Damien Black! Thirteen-year-old Dave Sanchez is a daytime student, an after-school courier…and a secret superhero! So far Dave’s been able to juggle his different roles. But in Dave’s hands is the scariest package he’s ever been asked to deliver. It’s a tube, sealed on each end with wax, and addressed to…Damien Black. Holy tacarole! He can’t just hand over a package to the most devious criminal in the city! Who knows what’s in there? So Dave breaks a cardinal rule of mail carriers everywhere—he opens the package. Inside is a small bottle that’s labeled: one drop, two at most, tested, works. The potion in this bottle is blue and sparkly and oozy and smelly—but what does it do? Ah, poor Dave. He has opened a Pandora’s box of trouble. Your classic can of worms. And as a result, he’ll find himself facing off with six-horned goats, terrifying tarantulas, a java-junkie monkey—and, of course, Damien Black.

Dave’s most despised teacher, a gleeful frog dissector named Ms. Veronica Krockle, is absent. Her students are psyched! But Sticky is suspicious. Especially when the substitute teacher turns out to be strangely interested in geckos. Or rather, boys with pet geckos. That’s no substitute! That’s Damien Black, dastardly treasure hunter and master of disguise! If Damien Black is in school, does that mean he’s behind Ms. Krockle’s absence? Could she have been kidnapped? And does that mean Dave has to rescue her? Ay chihuahua! The capped crusader is (reluctantly) on the case.

Dave Sanchez is an average boy with an after-school job and a pet gecko named Sticky. All very normal—until the day Sticky talks. Sticky tells Dave a wild tale of a former life of crime, searching for Aztec gold with a treasure hunter named Damien Black, and of a magical Aztec wristband with shiny gold power ingots that will give the wearer super powers. Dave doesn’t believe a word—until Sticky shows him the wristband. But while Sticky managed to escape with the wristband, Damien Black has the power ingots. So the lizard and treasure hunter each have something the other wants . . . very badly.

I began writing First Generation to teach children to be responsible for their pets. I wanted to show them that pets are living creatures deserving of proper care and respect. It developed into much more. First Generation is the story of great-great-grandmother Annie, an iguana, who was brought to the United States from Mexico. It follows her capture, journey, and acclimation to her new home. Young listeners will experience Annie’s feeling of loss and loneliness, her apprehensions and fears, and most importantly how she deals with these feelings, and overcomes perceived setbacks which are not actual setbacks at all. I wanted to convey these important concepts in addition to many others, including being a first generation citizen, learning to adapt in a new environment, life away from family and familiar faces, remembering lessons and teachings, dealing with bullies and prejudice, and last but certainly not least, hope! I wanted to inspire children to live their lives with integrity and respect for themselves, their families, and others. And I wanted to entertain and move their parents, as well.—Diane E. B. Bray
