The title for The Second Best Time comes from a Chinese proverb: “The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second best time is now.” And it suits a story of three people at a crossroads in their lives: Jack Caine (a.k.a. Jack Morgan), former lothario and sometimes con man, now the owner of a successful gallery in the United Kingdom; his daughter Charlie (Charlotte) Morgan Francesco, thirty-two and an art consultant; and new to the series, Kat (Kathleen O’Connor Shironsky), a twenty-four-year-old street-smart, unemployed bookkeeper. Dying of cancer and worried about his immortal soul, that rascal Jack confesses his long list of sins to the Reverend Nigel. The stunned but sympathetic clergyman convinces Jack that his most heinous sin was the one perpetrated on his daughters, who believe that he committed suicide. Both men agree that seeing their father suddenly reappear, only to die a painful death shortly after, would cause additional harm. Filled with guilt and remorse, Jack swears to see to it that his beloved daughters are content, safe, and protected, but anonymously. Typical of Jack, the plan he hatches is as convoluted and ingenious as it is entertaining. Seated on a park bench, struggling to find the courage to face social condemnation by leaving a miserable marriage to a husband with multiple sclerosis, Charlie meets Kat, whose boss was just arrested by the FBI for tax evasion. But losing her job is the least of Kat’s problems. Savings account emptied, three months behind on the rent, her husband has mysteriously disappeared. The mismatched pair join forces to overcome adversity and fight crime with brains, grit, and humor. And yes, along the way, some attractive gentlemen help provide the sizzle.

As terrified as she is about paying for her sister’s costly treatment and her own daily survival, Charlie soon realizes that she must learn what drove her father to kill himself. With Raul’s much-needed ego-bolstering, she pursues a career that makes practical use of her lanky five-foot-eleven frame. Despite roadblocks and emotional upheavals, she embarks on an ocean-spanning journey that leads to a family she doesn’t know, distressing truths about her father, crimes great and small, and a diabolical villain.

In two decades of psychiatry practice, John R. Sharp has worked with many people who experienced the same emotional distresses at specific times of the year, such as young woman who became depressed before Thanksgiving, a middle-aged man who felt anxious about making his summer travel plans, and people who made uncharacteristically extreme decisions as spring approached. In The Emotional Calendar, Sharp reveals how environmental, psychological, and cultural forces profoundly affect the way we feel, and how the enduring effects of personal anniversaries can influence our moods and behavior year after year. Sharp also illustrates a wide range of individual responses to cultural phenomena: some people feel anxious at the start of a new school year or are undone by the prospect of tax season while others are buoyed by the start of a sports season. Sharp shows us how to recognize the milestones on our own emotional calendars, providing guidance for how to break stifling patterns and remedy destructive moods. This empathetic and deeply resonant book will help listeners reach an emotional balance for the years ahead.

From the country’s foremost relationship expert and New York Times bestselling author of The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work comes a groundbreaking, practical program for repairing troubled relationships (and enriching healthy ones) with all the important people in our lives. In The Relationship Cure, Dr. John Gottman draws on substantial new research, as well as twenty years of experience studying relationships of many kinds to reveal the keys to what makes relationships work, why they break down, and how to fix them. He introduces the powerful new concept of the “emotional bid,” which he calls the fundamental unit of emotional connection, and he shows that all good relationships are built up through a process or making and receiving successful bids. Bids range from little things like a tap on the arm to express affection all the way up to the most probing and intimate ways we communicate. The Relationship Cure begins with revealing dialogues showing the bidding process in action. Dr. Gottman then instructs us how to analyze our own strengths and weaknesses in bidding interactions, as well as those of the important people in our lives, and presents the specific advice for using emotional bidding to build better relationships with spouses, lovers, children, siblings, friends, bosses, and colleagues. The Relationship Cure offers a powerful and simple set of steps with which to repair and enrich all of the relationships in our lives.
