Words. They’re the foundation of nearly everything of value in our world. They have the power to create, and the power to destroy. The power to inspire and to terrify. The power to enlighten, and also to obscure. And, more specifically for you, they have the power to attract wealth and success, and guarantee your brighter future. This is not hyperbole—it is based on rock solid research. Studies show that those people with large vocabularies are smarter, wealthier and happier than the average person—and substantially so. And here’s the best news of all, a large vocabulary is not tied to your social status, your genes or even your education level. It is a skill that can be learned—and it takes only thirty days. In this cutting-edge program, 30 Days to a More Powerful Vocabulary, personal development expert and English enthusiast, Dan Strutzel, will instruct, enlighten and inspire you with a concentrated thirty-day program that will teach you over 500 words. But, more than teaching you these words, the uniquely designed morning and evening review sessions will ensure that these words become a habit-knit part of your life—and with minimal effort on your part. Best of all, research shows that learning new words has an exponential effect on the size of your vocabulary—since learning one word, naturally produces an association between two to three more words. In short, after listening to and applying the system in this thirty-day program, you will not only have a bigger vocabulary—you will have a brighter future! Here’s just a sampling of what you’ll learn: The ten myths about building a dynamic vocabulary. The secret behind the exponential effect of vocabulary building. A thirty-day program designed to maximize learning and comprehension of over 500 words. The words you need to know about money and financial issues. The words you need to know about persuading others. The words you need to know about marriage, parenting and other relationships. The words you need to know about science. The words you need to know to be a great conversationalist. Why building a large, dynamic vocabulary is even more valuable in the digital age. And much more!

A presidential speechwriter for Bill Clinton explores the hidden power of analogy to fuel thought, connect ideas, spark innovation, and shape outcomes From the meatpacking plants that inspired Henry Ford’s first moving assembly line to the “domino theory” that led America into Vietnam to the “bicycle for the mind” that Steve Jobs envisioned as the Macintosh computer, analogies have played a dynamic role in shaping the world around us—and still do today. Analogies are far more complex than their SAT stereotype and lie at the very core of human cognition and creativity. Once we become aware of this, we start seeing them everywhere—in ads, apps, political debates, legal arguments, logos, and euphemisms, to name just a few. At their very best, analogies inspire new ways of thinking, enable invention, and motivate people to action. Unfortunately, not every analogy that rings true is true. That’s why, at their worst, analogies can deceive, manipulate, or mislead us into disaster. The challenge? Spotting the difference before it’s too late. Rich with engaging stories, surprising examples, and a practical method to evaluate the truth or effectiveness of any analogy, Shortcut will improve critical thinking, enhance creativity, and offer readers a fresh approach to resolving some of today’s most intractable challenges.

Do you wake up feeling rough? Then you’re philogrobolized. Find yourself pretending to work? That’s fudgelling. And this could lead to rizzling, if you feel sleepy after lunch. Though you are sure to become a sparkling deipnosopbist by dinner. Just don’t get too vinomadefied; a drunk dinner companion is never appreciated. The Horologicon (or book of hours) contains the most extraordinary words in the English language, arranged according to what hour of the day you might need them. From Mark Forsyth, the author of the international bestseller The Etymologicon, comes a book of weird words for familiar situations. From ante-jentacular to snudge by way of quafftide and wamblecropt, at last you can say, with utter accuracy, exactly what you mean.

“I’m reading the OED so you don’t have to. If you are interested in vocabulary that is both spectacularly useful and beautifully useless, read on.” So reports Ammon Shea, the tireless, word-obsessed, and more than slightly masochistic author of Reading the OED. The word lover’s Mount Everest, the Oxford English Dictionary has enthralled logophiles since its initial publication over eighty years ago. Weighing in at 137 pounds, it is the dictionary to end all dictionaries. In twenty-six chapters filled with sharp wit, sheer delight, and a documentarian’s keen eye, Shea shares his year inside the OED, delivering a hair-pulling, eye-crossing account of reading every word and revealing the most obscure, hilarious, and wonderful gems he discovers along the way.

638 Canadian Words & 23 Phrases extends the Sound Smarter and Be More Respected series into Canada. Over 500 of these uniquely Canadian words do not appear in standard Word and Open Office dictionaries. Listening to these words you get a flavor for the brevity and wit of Canadians. In fact, as the author comments, no other variety of English has such a strong sense of humor and wit. The accompanying eBook is very useful for looking up specific words, though the author admits preferring to listen to the words wash over him as he listens on a portable device, in the car, or just at home.

A veritable ‘TKO of terminology,’ Better Than Great is the essential guide for describing the extraordinary—the must-have reference for anyone wishing to rise above tired superlatives. Deft praise encourages others to feel as we do, share our enthusiasms. It rewards deserving objects of admiration. It persuades people to take certain actions. It sells things. Sadly, in this ‘age of awesome,’ our words and phrases of acclaim are exhausted, all but impotent. Even so, we find ourselves defaulting to such habitual choices as ‘good,’ ‘great,’ and ‘terrific,’ or stock synonyms that tumble out of a thesaurus—‘superb,’ ‘marvelous,’ ‘outstanding,’ and the like. The piling on of intensifiers such as ‘totally’ only makes matters worse, while negative modifiers (‘incredible,’ ‘unreal’) render our common parlance nearly tragic. Until now. Not to mince words, wunderkind of word-wonks Arthur Plotnik is proffering a well-knit wellspring of worthy and wondrous words to rescue our worn-down usage. Plotnik is both hella and hecka up to the task of rescuing the English superlative, offering readers the chance never to be at a loss for words of praise and acclamation!

This title is laser focused on making you sound smarter become more respected by using them. Simply systematically eliminated words that did meet this model that are perfectly good words for other purposes. First excluded were slang and popular culture words such as angst, avant-garde, Catch 22, kitsch, red herring, and white elephant. These are all useful words to know, just not in this context. Then eliminated were those words whose meanings are often misconstrued such as disinterested and complement/compliment. And finally eliminated were those words that sound awkward in speech such as accolade, baroque, epiphany, philistine, tete-a-tete, tryst, unrequited, and waft. Included words must sound appropriate, work seamlessly, and not be "show off" words. The final test is the words had to be those that people nodded slightly at when heard because they enhanced meaning and not elicit a slight grimace. So we worked hard to eliminate grimace words.
