Most of Wilfred Owen’s war poems were composed in a thirteen-month period he spent in Europe on the front lines of World War I. They have retained their originality and force ever since. The best of them are considered the finest poems about war in the English language. Poems was published in 1920. The poems of that work are included here and are as follows: “Strange Meeting” “Greater Love” “Apologia pro Poemate Meo” “The Show” “Mental Cases” “Parable of the Old Man and the Young” “Arms and the Boy” “Anthem for Doomed Youth” “The Send-Off” “Insensibility” “Dulce et Decorum Est” “The Sentry” “The Dead-Beat” “Exposure” “Spring Offensive” “The Chances” “S. I. W.” “Futility” “Smile, Smile, Smile” “Conscious” “A Terre” “Disabled” Warm thanks are extended to the Trustees of The Owen Estate for permission to record the 1920 poems using the texts from the definitive work Complete Poems and Fragments (1983) by Professor Jon Stallworthy.

The award-winning author of The Yellow Birds returns with an extraordinary debut poetry collection. National Book Award finalist, Iraq war veteran, novelist, and poet Kevin Powers creates a deeply affecting portrait of a life shaped by war. Letter Composed during a Lull in the Fighting captures the many moments that comprise a soldier’s life: driving down the Texas highway; waiting for the unknown in the dry Iraqi heat; writing a love letter; listening to a mother recount her dreams. Written with evocative language and discernment, Powers’ poetry strives to make sense of the war and its echoes through human experience. Just as The Yellow Birds was hailed as the “first literary masterpiece produced by the Iraq war” (Los Angeles Times), this collection will make its mark as a powerful, enduring work.

Death is a subject that few of us talk about even though it is a (perhaps dreadful) fact of life. And whether it is the actual end of our life’s journey or merely a transit point to the afterlife is something no one knows. But what do poets think of it? How do their minds tangle with the subject and make sense of this? In The Poetry of Death, Volume 2 we have collected poems from poets as rich and diverse as Lord Alfred Tennyson, Thomas Hardy, Edgar Allan Poe, and many others to share their words, thoughts and visions with us. Death is unavoidable, but the journey there should be as informed and enjoyable as possible.

“Home Burial” is a poem about a man and woman whose baby has died. It tells of the burial and how the parents react to this death, particularly their lack of communication. This piece is especially poignant given that Robert Frost’sown son, Elliot, died at age four, his daughter Elinor Bettina died when she was a few days old, his wife experienced a miscarriage, two of his daughters suffered mental breakdowns and died, and his son Carol committed suicide.
