Refreshing perfect English
- After being bought up with this story through many different cartoon versions, it was wonderful to hear the expectations and the acceptable culture of the Dickens era come through in this masterpiece of literature, written in true 19th century English. What a pleasure to hear the original version of this poignant children's tale with such an important message that is being lost in today's society. The concept needs to be revisited in today's world.

Meeting Mr. Dickens All Over Again
-
Does this ever happen to you? You don’t listen to Beethoven for a few years or you get out of the habit of perusing Shakespeare and gradually, without noticing what’s happening, you start docketing Beethoven and Shakespeare in the back ally of your mind as “great” artists whose works you “know” and therefore need not go back to.
This recording made me realize I’d done that with Charles Dickens. Offered as last year’s December freebie, I seized on it immediately, if for no other reason than because I knew the kids would be reading it for school soon and a recording would make the task easier—as well as more of a family affair. So far, so good. Only when we actually started listening during this Christmas season did I discover all over again what a masterful artist Dickens was. I won’t dwell on the obvious, but..I mean, gadzooks. From his sentence structure to the ideas those sentences express, he is a wonder to behold. And Simon Prebble’s reading does every sentence full justice.
Whatever Downpour is charging for this one now, it will not be money ill-spent. Especially if, like me, you need to get reacquainted with Mr. Dickens.
