A green hunting cap squeezed the top of the fleshy balloon of a head. The green earflaps, full of large ears and uncut hair and the fine bristles that grew in the ears themselves, stuck out on either side like turn signals indicating two directions at once. Full, pursed lips protruded beneath the bushy black moustache and, at their corners, sank into little folds filled with disapproval and potato chip crumbs. So enters one of the most memorable characters in recent American fiction. The hero of John Kennedy Toole's incomparable, Pultizer Prize–winning comic classic is one Ignatius J. Reilly, an obese, self-absorbed, hapless Don Quixote of the French Quarter, whose half-hearted attempts at employment lead to a series of wacky adventures among the lower denizens of New Orleans. This book has become an American comic masterpiece.

A new favorite
- In Walter Percy’s foreword, he talks about reading “A Confederacy for Dunces” for the first time. Not expecting much, he explains that the further he progressed in the story, the more and more he became convinced that John Kennedy Toole had written something great. And I agree wholeheartedly. When I first started listening, I wasn’t sure what to think. The story was too offbeat, the characters too eccentric. But as I listened, I found that I couldn’t help but love this outrageous, fascinating world. The story is clever and entertaining—a hilarious ride through the greasy streets of New Orleans. And I can confidently say that I now count Ignatius J. Reilly among my favorite protagonists. Plus, Barrett Whitener’s narration makes the listening experience all the better. His ability to portray a wide range of characters—each so distinctive and alive—kept me entranced from beginning to end. One of the few audio books I want to listen to again and again.
