“Dan Stevens’s captivating performance firmly roots you in the isolated mansion, as tension mounts with each disappearance.” Audible.com
“Stevens could read the phone book and I’d find it enthralling—but a classic, cozy mystery will do just fine…Stevens puts on several different accents (pretty flawlessly), making this whodunit an obsessive listen.” Off the Shelf (audio review)
“This classic suspense is made grander still by Dan Stevens’ ability to inhabit each character’s full range of emotions…As the guests’ numbers dwindle, Stevens ratchets up the mutual suspicion and ensuing panic beautifully. This is the perfect companion for a dark and stormy night.” AudioFile
“One of the most ingenious thrillers in many a day.” Time
“One of the very best, most genuinely bewildering Christies.” The Observer (London)
“The whole thing is utterly impossible and utterly fascinating. It is the most baffling mystery Agatha Christie has ever written.” New York Times
“The book must rank with Mrs. Christie’s previous best—on the top notch of detection.” New Statesman (London)
“The most astonishingly impudent, ingenious, and altogether successful mystery story since The Murder of Roger Ackroyd.” Daily Herald (London)
“Grand suspense, a unique trick, expertly handled.” Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

Very entertaining

This is definitely one of Agatha Christie’s most “out there” plot lines, but this audio is so entertaining that you really won’t mind. And you certainly won’t guess the ending! I had read the book in print years ago, but picked up the audio because of Dan Stevens, and I was not disappointed.

Great Writer, Great Mystery, Great Reader

Ok, I admit it. We purchased this to help our daughter with her high school reading assignment. But it turned into a sort of 1930's family-round-the-radio routine for several nights running as we heard the little soldier boys perish one by one.

Agatha Christie is great because, like Dorothy Sayers, her mysteries take place in the context of a definite moral universe. There is Good and Evil here, Right and Wrong. But, again like Sayers, because she is a great writer the physical universe in which her story takes place is as untidy and attenuated as the one in which we find ourselves. It all makes for a deeply satisfying experience.

Lastly, there is Dan Stevens, who reads perfectly. The characters are all distinct--though there are a majority of male voices to convey here, Stevens makes each one individual. Will look for his name next time I go looking for Christie.

Just....Yes

This is by far one of my favorite mystery novels of all time. Combine the brilliant writing of Agatha Christie with the smooth, captivating narration of Dan Stevens and you have a surefire winner. I challenge anyone to figure this one out before the big reveal at the end. When it comes to clever murder mysteries, Agatha Christie is in a class of her own.
