This book was just one long sex scene. It came off as essentially being little more than 1970’s porn, in that there are attempts at plots and character development that serve as little more than a backdrop or as transitions from one sex scene to the next. The characters were not likeable, the tensions were contrived and made little sense at all, and the men are all the classic macho pigs that we’ve been presented with for decades as the archetypical Texan male. This book relies too heavily on stereotypes.
It seems obvious that the author drew her knowledge of the different types of sexual expressions and orientations from research, not from first-hand direct interaction with those with first-hand knowledge of the scenarios and expressions and attitudes about which she writes. She also frustratingly holds the listeners’ hands the whole way through the story. A little more nuance would have been nice.
Overall, this book represents yet one more example of why mainstream publishers have no clue as to what constitutes well-written erotica. The type of sexual content Edwards writes about is on par with a lot of erotica; it’s her execution of the style that fails miserably. This book gives this already derided genre a bad name, in literary terms, that is.
