Acclaimed author Lois Lowry's first novel, A Summer to Die is a poignant and perceptive tale of love and tragedy. Meg isn't thrilled when she gets stuck sharing a bedroom with her older sister Molly. The two of them couldn't be more different, and it's hard for Meg to hide her resentment of Molly's beauty and easy popularity. But now that the family has moved to a small house in the country, Meg has a lot to accept. Just as the sisters begin to adjust to their new home, Meg feels that Molly is starting up again by being a real nuisance. But Molly's constant grouchiness, changing appearance, and other complaints are not just part of a new mood. And the day Molly is rushed to the hospital, Meg has to accept that there is something terribly wrong with her sister. That's the day Meg's world changes forever. Is it too late for Meg to show her true feelings?

Beautiful to listen to
-
I love Lois Lowery's works even as an adult and this one is beautifully brought to audio by narrator Andi Arndt who evokes the characters, scenery, relationships and emotions beautifully. It is truly touching.
It took me awhile to get the download correct - I started to download and then must have moved out of wi-fi range so some chapters were not complete and it took me a while to find out how to delete and re-load them. but to be fair I am new to audio books so the fact that I figured this out for myself is a plus for the ease of DownPour's system.

You Are Beautiful
- This is a book every tween or teen girl should read. Lowry’s underlying message conveys the importance of self-empowerment, accepting and loving one’s self, of pursuing friendships and passions regardless of what others think. Given that this book was originally published in 1977, Lowry’s message is especially relevant and progressive for the time at which it hit bookstores. The message I just described is not overt, and others (including Lowry herself) may disagree with me, because it’s not overt. Others could take away a different and more obvious message altogether. This would be that Lowry’s intent was to impress upon her readers that loss is a part of life, that at some time everyone leaves us, leaves this world. The same as gaining new loved ones is a part of life. And sometimes it takes those who care for us to help us realize it.
