Sideways 3 Chile follows the further adventures of Miles Raymond (played by Paul Giamatti in the now cult movie Sideways) and, to a lesser extent, his friend Jack. It's now ten years later, and Miles is a successful author, but he's still searching for something; depression has him, once again, in its taloned grip. Offered a chance to travel to the antipodean country of Chile and visit their wine regions for a magazine assignment, Miles, his world turned upside down by bad financial investments and even worse luck with relationships, happily agrees. A somewhat cynical Miles finds Chile, its people, and its spectacular and vastly diverse wine regions to be a life-transforming journey. The Sideways trilogy is now complete.

Mixed Review

I have mixed feelings about this book. Take Pickett’s use of diction so lofty many college professors would feel like idiots. At times, this language is eloquent and beautiful without ever sounding too purple. However, at a distance, the very same language gives an almost silly levity to an otherwise jittery, narcissistic character.

Then there’s the way women practically throw themselves at the protagonist. All I can see is Paul Giamatti when I listen to this book, and he’s not a particularly dashing dude. It made more sense as the book progresses and it becomes clear that Raymond is tall and in possession of a full head of hair.

This audiobook felt overall like a closure story, one written to show that Raymond finally found peace. Overall, the writing was beautiful and inspiring. I found myself writing every night after listening to more of the book. However, the character of Raymond Miles was way too in his own head for me to get into him. One of the best parts of this book was the celebration of the emerging wine industry in Chile. This book is masterfully narrated by Scott Brick. It’s always a delight to listen to a book read by him.

Nice Ending To Wonderful Series

This is the third book in this wonderful series or as I like to call it the Miles and Jack saga !! As most of us remember Sideways was a great book and even better movie. I have heard all three books now and I loved them all. Sideways 3 Chile is a fitting ending and well worth hearing the narration of Scott Brick is just perfect ! If I had to choose I would say the second book is the best , however once you're in you're in and have listen to Sideways 3 Chile . Enjoy it won't you , I know I did .
