For most of human history, killing animals presented few moral problems; they seemed made for our use. But the rapid growth and increasing dominance of human civilization, along with the discovery that humans and animals share many traits, raises many questions about the moral standing and “rights” of other living things. Is it fair to privilege human priorities over the rest of nature, and if so, on what basis or under what circumstances? Do we have a duty to protect animals or even plants?
