Vivid characters, excellent narration, suspenseful plot

This was my first time reading a Ruth Ware novel or listening to something narrated by Imogen Church, and I was pleasantly surprised by both. Don't be put off by the slow way that the story unfolds...you'll feel a bit like you're circling the plot without ever getting close enough to touch it. But, all of a sudden, the details start coming together and you realize that you've been in the thick of it for a while. Thanks to stunning narration, you will start to feel like the characters are strangely familiar, but not in the predictable sense. I have read many mystery/suspense stories, and I can honestly say that this one kept me guessing until the very end. I would definitely recommend In a Dark, Dark Wood to anyone who can truly appreciate richly detailed characters and a narrator who can bring them to life in a meaningful way.

Decent thriller--a touch too predictable

If you're at all like me, you'll guess the ending to this one in about the first five minutes and spend the next couple of hours waiting for the characters in the story to catch up. The premise is intriguing (a woman is invited to a bachelorette weekend of sorts for an old friend), and the characters themselves are well-written. Unfortunately, the author's skill in writing the characters can't quite get past the fact that they are all (and one in particular) characters I have already seen again and again in thrillers of this type. The book is well-written and the author really makes the characters seem real in the way that they speak and their actions. Aside from one plot element that had me rolling my eyes, it's pretty easy to cruise along with the story. I would tentatively recommend this one based on the author's skill, but if you've read even a handful of thrillers in the last few years there will be very little here to surprise you,
