Great narrative of complex conflict

Alison Weir, better than anyone else I've read, disentangles the extremely complex alliances and misalliances that comprise the Wars of the Roses. The participants seem like living persons rather than names of placeholders; the battles are vivid and brutal. Her coverage of the story begins early enough for her book to be a useful supplement to and commentary on Shakespeare's history plays, although that is clearly not her purpose.

Maggie Mash is an interesting narrator, and I hope to hear other titles by her in the future.
