M is a magician of modest wit, dim ability, and few scruples, who would prefer to spend his easy immortality drinking artisanal beer and making eyes at smiling women. Alas, in the infinite nexus of the universe that is New York City, equilibrium is no easy thing to maintain. Canal pirates, drug-induced divinities, pocket steam-punk universes, hipster zombies, ex-girlfriends, and the devil are all taken in easy stride—but when the city’s uneasy dual monarchy threatens to break into outright war, it will take all of M’s cleverness to keep the capital of existence from going the way of Atlantis. He might even have to get out of bed before noon. Sharp, surreal, and hilarious, A City Dreaming is the postmodern fantasy adventure you never saw coming.

Editorial Reviews

Editorial Reviews

“Anyone with even the slightest interest in genre fiction should be delighted by this whacked-out fantasy novel.” Kirkus Reviews
“Clever, funny, and at times horrifying…Almost every page had something that made me smile, and I’m envious of the rich world-building.” Alex Bledsoe, author of The Hum and the Shiver
“A marvelous, gonzo urban fantasy…A City Dreaming is wonderfully weird and extremely inventive…A must read of the year.” Civilian Reader
“Deceptively wry, visceral, and engaging, Polansky creates a view of New York that is oddly comforting.” Lawrence M. Schoen, Nebula Award nominated author of Barsk
“Daniel Polansky is what would happen if Tom Robbins and Douglas Adams got drunk at a dive bar in New York, and that is a tremendously great thing. A City Dreaming is a rare, wondrous, playful, imaginative smorgasbord that breathes new life into urban fantasy.” Delilah S. Dawson, author of the Blud series
“A City Dreaming grabbed me and didn’t let me go. I’m resentful of that kind of storytelling. It makes one miss subway stops and meals and bedtimes. When Polansky weaves his next world, I’ll be first in line to enter it.” Mur Lafferty, award-winning podcaster and author of the Afterlife Series
“Daniel Polansky is one of my favorite new writers. Again and again, he manages to reinvent and invert well-worn genres. Imagine a mash-up of Trainspotting and Harry Potter and you might end up with something as wonderfully gonzo as A City Dreaming. M is a gloriously underachieving, couch-surfing mage for the Instagram generation.” David S. Goyer, writer of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy
“There’ll be two kinds of people in this world: ones who never want to leave the New York of A City Dreaming, and those that never want to see it. For those of us making up the former, welcome home. Daniel Polansky, and his latest work, surges like a revelation.” Matt Fraction, Eisner Award–winning author of Sex Criminals
