It should have been a case like any other: a missing princess, a king willing to pay in gold for her return. But before he realizes it, private investigator Eddie LaCrosse, a slightly shopworn sword jockey with a talent for discretion and detection, is swept up in a web of mystery and deceit involving a brutally murdered royal heir, a queen accused of an unspeakable crime, and the tragic past he thought he'd left behind. In order to uncover the answers he seeks, Eddie must delve into the dark underbelly of society while digging deep into his own private history, drawing past and present together. Vast conspiracies, women both beautiful and deadly, and a centuries-old revenge scheme are only a few of the pieces in a lethal puzzle. The Sword-Edged Blonde is a tour de force foray into a realm of action, intrigue, and murder.

Uninspired hardboiled detective + fantasy
-
At best, this book should be entertaining for someone who adores film noir and fantasy all mashed together.
But for me, all it was was a boring, uninspired mixture of two cliches. I couldn't even make it through the whole book. The plot and characters were uninteresting and one-dimensional, and I was offended by the female objectification.

A largely enjoyable book

Note: some minor spoilers.
In a world of tough men and staggeringly beautiful women (and some silly names), Eddie LaCrosse is one of the former (who happens to come across some of the latter). He is the kind of guy who travels all over the place, takes no shit, and doesn't lose a fight unless it involves getting up with a bad headache. Which I guess goes to show that what goes around comes round.
The book is generally an enjoyable read. The only things that bothered me were that first of all the character, who is also the narrator, deliberately keeps from telling things he knows. And I don't mean conclusions and suspicions, but things about the past, or things which just happened in the story. I feel that's a shoddy way for the writer to keep suspense.
The second thing I didn't like was all the beautiful women and what happens to them. In particular I wasn't comfortable with Eddie making love to an emaciated and scabbed and yet incredibly alluring woman.
Still, the story held my interest well enough and I might have given it 4 stars if I wasn't just now listening to The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch, which, while not perfect itself, is a lot more imaginative than this book.
Narration was fine. I had no problem with it.
