On the Fence For Me

I really don’t know what to think about it now that I have completed it. On one hand, it fails to reach the heights of the original Sword of Truth series. You may say, this is about Nicci and Nathan, not Richard and Kahlan, but hey, it’s in the same world, and Nicci and Nathan have been around since SoT book 2. However, I can say without a doubt, this book is hands down better than Omen Machine, Third Kingdom, Severed Souls, and Warheart!!! I struggle to give it three stars, but I know it’s not a two star book. More like 2.5. I say that because it is not all bad. Going forward, I would like to break it down into things I liked and disliked. VERY SPOILERIFIC, so venture forward with care. [
Things I Liked:
• To begin with, the writing is way better than Omen Machine, Third Kingdom, Severed Souls, and Warheart. There is some repetition, but it’s toned down.
• Also, this book doesn’t seem to be written by a 14 year old, as the aforementioned 4 books do.
• I like the addition of the characters of Bannon and Thistle. I do feel as if Bannon progresses with his sword ability way too fast, but that is a minor thing.
• I also like the addition of the panther. I like the tie between it and Nicci. It is reminiscent of Drizzt and Guenhwyvar by R.A. Salvatore.
• Loved the dragon dying grounds thing and having to go there. I was kind of hoping the dragon would have given them a ride back ala Scarlet and Gregory
Things I Disliked:
• Nicci and Nathan calling each other Wizard and Sorceress all the time. Come on, they have known each other for quite some time . . . they can call each other by name.
• While I like the character Bannon, I don’t think he was written all that well, especially when it comes to his dialogue.
• I have always hated the term “witch woman”. I understand how a witch woman is different from a sorceress in these books, but why can she just be a witch?
• I felt like we have dealt with the whole “wizard losing his powers” thing in other books in the series, so not sure why it had to be in this book, and at least part of the next one apparently. It got old very quickly.
• I did not like Nathan calling Bannon “my boy”. That’s a Zedd thing.
• The whole life book thing that Nathan wanted. Seemed pointless however I acknowledge it may come into play later.
• I didn’t like how Nicci sometimes seems to be all powerful and at other times, she’s not. It seems to be written that way because of convenience from the author. She couldn’t stand up much to The Adjudicator, however when facing Victoria (Life’s Mistress – stupid) in the end, nothing could stop her.
• And lastly, I realize it could just be an issue for me. But the requirement of the arrow and having Thistle sacrifice herself by digesting the poisonous flower felt cheap. As soon as I got to the part about the requirements of the arrow, I knew it would mean Thistle. The only other person Nicci loves is Richard. So it had to be her. I think she was a good character and she was something that Nicci needed, a surrogate daughter. So much potential lost there. She was like Rachel part 2 in a sense, and to me could have been other part of Nicci’s redemption. Instead, she was wasted. And I understand it was a plot device to give that part of the story that extra umph in the drive to kill Victoria. Goodkind has handled this better in the past. In Wizard’s First Rule, Shota tells Richard that Zedd would attack him in the future and shows him how to defend it. When first reading it, I was like, no way, but the way Goodkind had it come to fruition was handled well. This time, for me, not so well. And I know many would disagree, but that’s my take on it. A wasted opportunity.
Overall, this was a better reading experience than his previous offerings, but still not as good as his early books. Will I read the next book? I don’t know at this point. Nicci and Nathan are ok characters, but they are no Richard and Kahlan. And I don’t know if current Goodkind is able to tap into early Goodkind. It may be a good idea for his to stop writing in this world altogether before he messes it all up too much. And on a final note, I’m still pretending Omen Machine, Third Kingdom, Severed Souls, and Warheart don’t exist
