Slough House is a dumping ground for British intelligence agents who’ve screwed up a case in any number of ways—by leaving a secret file on a train or blowing a surveillance. River Cartwright, one such “slow horse,” is bitter about his failure and about his tedious assignment transcribing cell phone conversations. When a young man is abducted and his kidnappers threaten to broadcast his beheading live on the Internet, River sees an opportunity to redeem himself. Is the victim who he first appears to be? And what’s the kidnappers’ connection with a disgraced journalist? As the clock ticks on the execution, River finds that everyone has his own agenda.

Editorial Reviews

Editorial Reviews

“This is blackly funny, tense, and worryingly plausible. The most enjoyable British spy novel in years.” Mail on Sunday (London), five-star review
“A funny, stylish, satirical, gripping story…Memorably seedy characters, sharp dialogue, complex plot. I’m hooked.” Guardian (London)
“Herron avoids the easy cliché of misfits banding together to right a wrong, instead painting his slow horses as complex characters who are just as fallible as their ‘faster’ counterparts. Publishers Weekly
“[A] crackling good spy thriller-farce…filled with acidic wit and engaging misdirection…A wonderfully funny, farcical, deeply cynical skewering.” Booklist

Well executed style

As read by Gerard Doyle, Herron’s style of quick cutting from one local and character to another sets him up as a unique writer of unexpected style. Even at its most violent moments, there is a smile that might come to your lips as he weaves this character’s irony and sense of humor into the heavier storyline. For example, Jackson Lamb, the main character, has a propensity for being antisocial, scruffy, scratching, drinking, smoking, and yes, farting. For a spy novel, given the story is comprised of a group of screw ups and very strange misfits in British Intelligence, there is much to be surprised at. The characters are quirky, yet spot-on serious when the real talking and planning begins. For those who like their stories with character surprises, there is much to appreciate in this book. Recommended.
