SOON TO BE A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE directed by Denis Villeneuve, starring Timothée Chalamet, Josh Brolin, Jason Momoa, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Javier Bardem, Dave Bautista, Stellan Skarsgård, and Charlotte Rampling. Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Maud'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family—and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream. A stunning blend of adventure and mysticism, environmentalism and politics, Dune won the first Nebula Award, shared the Hugo Award, and formed the basis of what is undoubtedly the grandest epic in science fiction. Frank Herbert's death in 1986 was a tragic loss, yet the astounding legacy of his visionary fiction will live forever.

Editorial Reviews

Powerful, convincing, and most ingenious. Robert A. Heinlein
A portrayal of an alien society more complete and deeply detailed than any other author in the field has managed...a story absorbing equally for its action and philosophical vistas...An astonishing science fiction phenomenon. The Washington Post
One of the monuments of modern science fiction. Chicago Tribune
“Unique...I know nothing comparable to it except Lord of the Rings. Arthur C. Clarke
“This full-cast performance, augmented by sound effects and music, does justice to a classic of the science fiction genre…Euan Morton imbues Paul with an effective mix of vulnerability and conviction in his destiny. Simon Vance is a stalwart anchor narrator. Scott Brick, Orlagh Cassidy, and others contribute to an engrossing presentation. This prose is well suited to being read aloud, and this production makes the book easily accessible to newcomers and Dune fanatics… Winner of the AudioFile Earphones Award.” AudioFile
"Herbert uses his tome to treat concerns of environmental distress (it was published on the wave of attention paid to the fraught ecological practices of the sixties). Like most good science fiction, the fantastic and imaginative are used as tools for examining reality—and in this case, it became reality: names of planets in Herbert’s Dune universe are now nomenclature for geographic features on Saturn’s moon Titan…The book…is so action-packed that it barely gives you a moment to stop and catch your breath.” Paris Review

I Have Conquered Dune!

Let’s talk about Dune. For years, I avoided it. I’d heard about it and read the description. It did not inspire interest. Recently, two things inspired me to read it . . . the trailer for the upcoming movie and this video - https://youtu.be/oOomSvGXfaM . For me, this story itself is a very solid 3.5 star story. I was never bored. I took my time with, it, never rushing it. And I think that made for a positive experience. Back to ratings, my personal mantra is, I do not round up. But I am going to adjust that rule with this book, and I hope I can get my point across. I just finished this book 55 years after it initially came out. Since its publication, it has become a very well-liked and respected book, and it has influenced many movies and books since then. I have recognized some during my reading, but I know there are many more. The influences are what matter. Had I been alive and read the book when it was first published, what is now influence would have been fresh, new, and exciting to me. Instead, I got the fresh, new, and exiting by what it inspired and influenced. That cannot be ignored. Therefore I pay the respect it earned now. Therefore, not rounding up, I’m left with 3 stars. I’m adding another full star for being a trailblazer for what followed. Therefore, I give Frank Herbert’s Dune a well-deserved and well-earned 4 out of 5 stars. As of now, I do no plan on reading the subsequent books in the series.
