Tess O’Rourke dreams of becoming the first female chief of police in Long Beach, California. As commander of the East Division, she is well on her way … until the night she responds to an officer-needs-assistance call and fatally shoots an unarmed teenager. Despite being cleared of wrongdoing by a grand jury, Tess is so hounded by the public that she takes a job in Oregon to escape the bad press. Winning over the residents of Rogue’s Hollow might be more difficult than adjusting to her new role as police chief in the small backwater town—especially when her closest friend, the pastor’s wife, goes missing and the woman’s cousin is found shot. Tess finds an ally in sheriff’s deputy Steve Logan, but as they track down Rogue’s Hollow’s first murderer, she worries that she’s breaking one of her rules and getting too close to him.

Editorial Reviews

“Readers who crave suspense will devour Cantore’s engaging crime drama while savoring the sweet romantic swirl. Diverse, relatable characters and authentic police procedures establish the story’s solid foundation, yet the steady cadence of personal relationships and exciting developments in the investigation bring this story to life. Crisis Shot kicks off…with a literal bang and media frenzy of both the urban and small-town variety. The perfectly flawed main character endures culture shock and discovers the intimacy of enforcing the law in a smaller population. Fans are sure to enjoy this Law & Order meets West Coast Mayberry mashup.” RT Book Reviews (4 stars)

Enjoyable story

This was a great story. I didn't realize until I got to the end that this was written by a retired cop, but I wasn't surprised. The procedures and situations in which Tess responds seem authentic. Tess is a strong woman and I liked the fact that she doesn't give up on her dream of remaining a cop. The story is strong and not only held my interest, but I also found myself eager to get back to listening. The plot is laid out well, although it seemed to me to move slowly into the crime. The narrator does a decent job and the recording sounds professional. **I was given a free download of this book and requested to leave a review. This in no way influenced my rating.
