On a muggy August day in 2002, Alex Lind disappears without a trace. On an equally stifling August day in 1658, Matthew Graham finds her on an empty Scottish moor. Life will never be the same for Alex—or for Matthew. Due to a series of rare occurrences, Alexandra Lind is thrown three centuries backwards in time. She lands at the feet of Matthew Graham—an escaped convict making his way home to Scotland in this the year of our Lord 1658. Matthew doesn’t quite know what to make of this concussed and injured woman who has seemingly fallen from the skies—what is she, a witch? Alex gawks at this tall, gaunt man with hazel eyes, dressed in what to her mostly looks like rags. At first, she thinks he might be some sort of hermit, an oddball, but she quickly realizes the odd one out is she, not he. Catapulted from a life of modern comfort, Alex grapples with this new existence, further complicated by the dawning realization that someone from her time has followed her here—and not exactly to extend a helping hand. Potential compensation for this brutal shift in fate comes in the shape of Matthew—a man she should never have met, not when she was born three centuries after him. Matthew quickly proves himself a willing and most capable protector, but he comes with baggage of his own, and on occasion it seems his past will see him killed. At times, Alex finds it all excessively exciting and longs for the structured life she used to have. How will she ever get back? And more importantly, does she want to? A Rip in the Veil is the first in Anna Belfrage’s time slip series featuring time traveler Alexandra Lind and her seventeenth-century husband, Matthew Graham.

Story

A Rip in the Veil

Here is a rollicking good time travel, or time slip, historical Scottish fiction. Author Belfrage has filled this enticing story with plenty of scenery, sex, mysticism, sex, interesting main characters and others, and sex! In some ways, A Rip in the Veil will remind you of that other Scottish time-travel heavy-weight, except I believe that Matthew, the brooding hero of this book is on the Commonwealth side, not the Bonnie Prince Charles side (but I’m American, so not sure about all that!)

One hot August day, heroine Alex comes to a literal and figurative cross-roads when a rogue storm creates a vortex and sweeps her from the present day to the Scotland of 1658. She is rescued by Matthew who is bewildered by her crazy attire of jeans, and her forward personality. They get to know each other while experiencing many exciting adventures on the moors and by the time they have reached Matthew’s land-holding, they are in love, and married, passionately so, as I have noted. Matthew and Alex continue to face many trials, some of them brought on by Matthew’s brother, and the English army, and some of their problems are caused by Alex’s strange mother- is she a witch?

The author brings a complicated plot to life with her well-crafted descriptions and dialogue. Humor, passion, romance, time travel and the paranormal make this a vibrant story. Matthew and Alex are memorable characters and the author did a good job in presenting their very different viewpoints. I thought the story was a bit lengthy and wordy, but I enjoyed listening to it and I recommend it!

Greg Patmore was a masterful narrator and handled all the voices and accents so well. His voice fit the story and was easy and clear to listen to. The Downpour app worked fine.

Thanks to the author for the opportunity listen to this audio book.

Had Anna Belfrage been allowed to choose, she’d have become a professional time traveler. As this was impossible, she instead authored the acclaimed Graham Saga, a time-traveling series set in the seventeenth century. Her latest series is set in the 1320s and features Adam de Guirande, his wife Kit, and their adventures during Roger Mortimer’s rise to power.
