“Judas Coyne is a rock star who collects Goth girlfriends and macabre objects. Stephen Lang portrays him with a cool cockiness, his voice reflecting his certainty that those around seek his approval and attention…Threats of death and destruction are intensified by Lang’s tight tones as Jude and his brave girlfriend combat the supernatural.” AudioFile
“Erupting out of mundane surroundings, the shocks in Hill’s riveting debut novel can be lurid and blood-drenched, or as quietly chilling as a casual phone call from an old, dead friend.” Entertainment Weekly
“Wild, mesmerizing, perversely witty…A Valentine from hell.” New York Times
“[A] cardiac hazard of a first novel.” Chicago Tribune
Heart-Shaped Box is a fine mix of psychological terror and gruesome horror…Remarkable, moving, a well-crafted.” Denver Post

Very Good Read

I have become a huge fan of audio books in the past few years. For one, it helps when I may reach a part with a lot of exposition or perhaps a lull in the action so to speak. And secondly, I much more enjoy listening to a book versus the garbage that plays on the radio these days. Not all garbage, but in my opinion, a lot of it. This book grabs you from the beginning. Here we have this character, an aging rock star named Judas Coyne, who dabbles in dark arts, meaning he is attracted to items such as a witch's confession, art from a serial killer, and a real snuff film. His assistant informs him that there is a ghost for sale on the internet, and immediate jumps at the notion of "owning" a ghost. Of course, from my perspective as a reader, I know this means bad news. And it is, as the main character is now faced with the daunting task of finding out why the ghost was for sale, who was selling it, and most importantly, why. In the process, he is forced to take a long look at his life and reconcile his mistakes, and, of course, stay one step ahead of a ghost bent on creating havoc in Jude's life.

The characters are very likable, even in their darkest moments. There are not many dull parts, and when the action gets going, it can be very fierce. If I picked up anything from this story to add to my life, it's . . . never, never, never buy a ghost. Online or in real life. Ever. This is the second book I have read by Joe Hill, and I now know I will, from this point on, be a constant reader, like I am with his father.
