It was a split-second operation as delicate and as deadly as a time bomb. It demanded the concentrated devotion and vigilance of more than six hundred American and British air force officers, every single one of them, every minute, every hour, every day, and every night for more than a year. With only their bare hands and the crudest of homemade tools, they sank shafts, built underground railroads, forged passports, drew maps, faked weapons, and tailored German uniforms and civilian clothes. They developed a fantastic security system to protect themselves from the German “ferrets” who prowled the compounds with nerve-racking tenacity and suspicion. And against all odds, they pulled off a daring mass escape from a German POW camp.

Great Entertainment
- If you ever doubt what a human being can do in difficult circumstances, listen to this book. These soldiers from the United States, England, Ireland, and Scotland held in a German prison camp for years were so determined to escape that they masterminded an incredible series of events to try to tunnel their way to freedom. And they did it over and over again, after each escape route was discovered. With devious cunning, intelligence, creativity, and minute coordination, they met every setback to their escape—and there were plenty, including tons of yellow sand that kept collapsing their tunnels that had to be excavated, hidden in bags under their clothing, and disposed of out of sight because it would be easily spotted on ground level. What was truly incredible was the stellar artistic ability of the some of the soldiers who were able to fabricate imitations of stamped, dated passports, up-to-date rail passes, detailed maps, German uniforms, and German weapons from the most unlikely of materials that could be smuggled in. The sad part of the account is the resulting freedom of only a very few of the participants. Nevertheless, this true story is great entertainment, especially as read by Simon Vance.
