This is the story of the wild and crazy years that the author spent growing up with Steve Martin and their apprenticeship in comedy. No one could better chronicle Steve’s life than his best and oldest friend, Morris Walker. Steve and Morris were class clowns together, charming the girls and the teachers with their wit and later setting out on the road together as comedians. This personal account will introduce you to the Steve Martin you’ve never seen before: the eleven-year-old already performing near-perfect sleight-of-hand magic tricks, the thirteen-year-old selling guidebooks at Disneyland, the twenty-year-old stretching his comedic wings as a vaudeville-style entertainer, and the twenty-one-year-old Emmy Award–winning Hollywood whiz kid.

“Finally, a book about me! I loved this book and fell deeply in love with the central character!” Steve Martin
“At last I have a way of answering the bothersome questions that I have too often been asked: ‘What is Steve Martin really like and how did he get that way?’ Read Morris Walker’s compelling and hilarious biography on Steve Martin and I’m off the hook!” Carl Reiner
“Here is a riveting biographical account of one-night stands and multimillion dollar Las Vegas shows, working Disneyland with Morris Walker to a film career that made him an international celebrity. Funny, vivid, candid, as entertaining as it is informative, this is a ‘must read’ for Steve Martin’s legions of ardent fans!” Internet Bookwatch
“Irony and lilt in prudent doses are required for this book full of nostalgia and preposterous youthful frolicking. Whitener finds it, with a clear, distinct voice that produces an effortless listen.” AudioFile

Story

disappointingly disappointing

Two of my favorite books from the last 10 years have been Born Standing Up (Steve Martin's beautiful autobiography) and The Lives of Carl Atman (Morris Walker's book...which is profound). So, imagine my surprise when I find out that Morris and Steve were childhood friends and he was writing a memoir about that friendship. Also, imagine my surprise that not only is it not that interesting, but actually...kinda badly written. Barrett is fine as a narrator. I am looking forward to the next book that Morris Walker (provided that it is fiction which he is amazing at) and I would implore you to seek out The Lives of Carl Atman, and Born Standing up, BOTH available here on Downpour.
