WINNER OF THE PULITZER PRIZE "The Goldfinch is a rarity that comes along perhaps half a dozen times per decade, a smartly written literary novel that connects with the heart as well as the mind....Donna Tartt has delivered an extraordinary work of fiction."--Stephen King, The New York Times Book Review Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his longing for his mother, he clings to the one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art. As an adult, Theo moves silkily between the drawing rooms of the rich and the dusty labyrinth of an antiques store where he works. He is alienated and in love--and at the center of a narrowing, ever more dangerous circle. The Goldfinch is a mesmerizing, stay-up-all-night and tell-all-your-friends triumph, an old-fashioned story of loss and obsession, survival and self-invention, and the ruthless machinations of fate.

Riveting after Las Vegas
- It took me a while to get into it but after Theo returned to NY from Las Vegas the book took off and I could stopping listening for the rest of the weekend! Everything went to pot in my life until The Goldfinch was finished. The last 10 pages were a bit too philosophical for me but I re-read them thinking I missed something.

Belabored and abortive
- This is a very long book that promises a deep and cathartic transformation of the main character. That transformation does not occur and ultimately that is why the book fails. This is a story of son who loses his mother; that part occurs in the first quarter of the book. The rest of the novel catalogs in endless detail his life lived numb and paralyzed with grief. He endures what we all endure, life's ups and downs: people who help and people who hurt, but remains numb and paralyzed. He is in the possession of a priceless piece of art that is his tenuous connection to his mother. This painting takes his life into a subplot about stolen art and those who deal in it. The characters are vividly drawn and you do care about what happens to the protagonist. It is a disappointing novel in that it promises so much more than it delivers. I wanted so much for the protagonist to find healing and a sense of himself beyond his grief, but the novel more or less just stops after the piece of art subplot resolves. That he endures is what we are given. For many, this is enough. For me, it was not.

Well Deserved Praise!

I’m not even sure where to start talking about this book! Dense, raw, beautifully written, and achingly sad in places – nearly a saga as it follows so many phases of the main character’s life. It’s just GOOD. The characters are so flawed, but their development is so compelling. Its one of those books where even though the major events are very spaced, you're somehow just as riveted by every character, anecdote, development, and relationship, no matter how small. The audio version especially was fantastic – the characters and voices are all so distinct and entertaining, you forget it’s only narrated by one person. Definitely not a casual listen, but very worth the time. You’ll want to start a book club just to talk more about this book!
