Editorial Reviews

Editorial Reviews

“A surprise ending that is gutsier and much less predictable than the rest of the series would lead one to expect.” Los Angeles Times
“Brilliant.” Amazon.com, editorial review
“With this trilogy topper, the fate of Tris Prior, Caleb, Marcus, and the others finally becomes fully apparent. The series that began with Divergent and Insurgent comes to its ripe conclusion.” Barnes & Noble, editorial review
“Roth shakes up her storytelling (and will do the same to some readers) in this highly anticipated, largely satisfying wrap-up to the Divergent trilogy…Roth’s plotting is, as readers have come to expect, intelligent and complex. Dangers, suspicion, and tension lurk around every corner, and the chemistry between Tris and Tobias remains heart-poundingly real…This final installment will capture and hold attention until the divisive final battle has been waged.” Publishers Weekly
“This heir to The Hunger Games is arguably the highest-demand book of the year…Resistance is futile.” Booklist
“The story provides a thought-provoking metaphor for crucial conflicts of adolescence, as have its predecessors.” Kirkus Reviews
“An extraordinary end to an extraordinary series. Crafting the finale to such a beloved and popular trilogy can be no easy feat, but Roth pulls it off, big time…Truly memorable and impressive…A triumph.” RT Book Reviews (4½ stars, Top Pick!)

Read if you MUST finish the trilogy

The pace of this book is slow, like the first two. The addition of the male narrator helped me recognize whose perspective I'm listening to, though his female voice is ridiculous. It was nice to hear things from Four's perspective. I guess this was done for a few reasons, including the fact that there's another book outside the trilogy told from Four's perspective, and this was a setup for that.

The plot was very linear. These books are like a character study of damaged people, without judgement. And the exploration of why people make choices and how those choices impact your life and those around you. More plot development or longer books would have helped this story.

Disappointing

First of all, the readers do a really great job. But that is not the issue. The problem lies with the actual story. The first two in the series were entertaining and completely riveting. I expected this novel to carry that same momentum. However, this story dragged. I really had to push myself to get through the first few chapters and then after repeated attempts to finish it I finally abandoned it all together. It kind of felt like a first draft, the story progressed at a tedious pace, the characters voices lost distinction and then it just felt like a backstory dump. I won't reveal any spoilers here. You can read all about them on amazon.com. I knew what other reviewers had said but I figured they just didn't like how she decided to end the story. I eventually decided to give it a chance. But it almost feels like another person wrote it....so many superfluous similes and metaphors (gag.) Read it if you feel you need closure on the series but you might be happier imagining your own ending instead.
