Editorial Reviews

“In this remarkable series, Winters creates a melancholy hybrid of crime and science fiction, managing to subvert the expectations of both genres.” San Francisco Chronicle
“That Winters can paint for us a world that is so bared-boned, raw, and honest is why this is one of the best books of the year so far.” Cleveland Plain Dealer
“Winters, a major talent, gives us the best realized world on the verge of annihilation that this reviewer has seen since Cormac McCarthy.” Sci Fi magazine
“This is quality writing.” Cape Cod Times
“The conclusion of Winters’ trilogy…still finds Hank Palace tilting at windmills…It is impossible not to love Hank and his need to try to do the right thing all the time. The bleak premise of this series could be too much, but, instead, it gives a certain clarity to the action of people who become their most real selves when the end of the world arrives. And Hank could have been quite a policeman.” Library Journal
“The concluding volume of the Last Policeman trilogy…reads like a postapocalyptic story…The series has had a built-in expiration date from the very beginning, so readers shouldn’t be upset that it’s ending now, but—and this is an indication of Winters’ abundant gifts as a storyteller—we really, really wish he could find a way to keep it going. A fine conclusion to a unique and compelling trilogy.” Booklist
“As fascinating as Winters’ imagined societal breakdown can be, it’s his attention to human connections—heartfelt, heroic and lethal—that really make this trilogy worth reading.” Kirkus Reviews
“The third audiobook in the Last Policeman trilogy may not be the place to start, but Peter Berkrot’s dependable narration makes the going a lot easier…Berkrot excels at portraying Palace’s insightful thinking as well as the dry humor that courses through the book. He’s adept at portraying the Amish man who brings peace to Hank on what is supposed to be the final day. This audio is compelling enough to inspire listeners to backtrack to Berkrot’s performances of Winters’s previous offerings.” AudioFile

A masterpiece

A poetic, tragic, gorgeous novel. If I had known how excellent it would be on audio, I would have listened to all three. I am so glad my dad only gave me the first two in print, because hearing the conclusion was really superb. At first I thought Peter's voice a bit exaggerated, but I soon realized it was absolutely in the spirit of Winter's novel. It became so perfect I could not have asked for a better rendition.
