The second in Jaclyn Moriarty’s brilliant, acclaimed fantasy trilogy, The Colors of Madeleine Picking up where A Corner of White left off, Elliot is more determined to find his father than ever, now that he knows he’s still alive. But first he must help Princess Ko find her own missing family, as the secret search for the royals of Cello begins. As part of the Royal Youth Alliance, Elliot will travel all over the Kingdom of Cello looking for any clue or detail or spell that could bring them (and maybe his own father) home. But once he learns that the royal family has been trapped in the World all this time, with no memory of their former lives, his real value to the Alliance becomes clear: he’s the only one with a connection to the World, through Madeleine. Together, through notes, letters, and late nights, Elliot and Madeleine must find a way to travel across worlds and bring missing loved ones home. The stakes are high, the writing both hilarious and heart-poundingly suspenseful, and the experience of reading it, sheer pleasure.

Editorial Reviews

Editorial Reviews

“In this second book in the trilogy, Madeleine (in Cambridge, England) and Elliot (in the Kingdom of Cello) continue to communicate through letters they send through a ‘crack’ between their two worlds…The characters’ desperate yearning for absent loved ones adds emotional depth to the story, which is full of clever invention and intrigue, excellent surprises, and all the sophisticated wit Moriarty’s fans expect. This wholly engrossing book outdoes the first—not an easy task.” Horn Book (starred review)
“[A] lively follow-up to A Corner of White…Mixed in with the regal intrigue is a complex, moving look at families, friendship, and loss…[that] expands an already complex and intricately drawn world. Readers will be clamoring for the next title, after the thrilling yet satisfying conclusion.” School Library Journal (starred review)
“The plotting is as innovative and riveting as the world-making here, and the characters are drawn with the same rich dimensionality you find in Pratchett’s Discworld or one of Diana Wynne Jones’ fantasies. Moriarty’s wordsmithery likewise compares favorably with those two masters, delighting and surprising readers with quirky turns of phrase, evocative, synesthetic metaphors, and swift, effective shifts in register.” Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books (starred review)
“This is madcap, whimsical, smart, and even heartbreaking, but Moriarty never drops the dozens of balls in the air. By turns coming-of-age and wild adventure (the Lake of Spells and the Turquoise Rain in Jagged Edge stand out), this volume complicates the characters, expands the world-building, and sets things up for a grand finish in the trilogy closer.” Kirkus Reviews (starred review)
“Moriarty’s The Colors of Madeleine series continues its odd, charming blend of fantasy, quirky humor, attractive geeky teens, and genuine compassion for those who have lost their health, family, or identity…Moriarty’s magical kingdom boasts a rich and creative history, and her matter-of-fact and logically detailed narrative tone will appeal to Harry Potter fans.” Booklist
“In this sequel …Moriarty continues her quirky and original fantasy…This remarkable fantasy brilliantly interweaves the stories of both worlds, and Moriarty’s world-building in creating the kingdom of Cello is first rate. The characters are inventive, irresistible, and fully realized, especially Madeleine and Elliot, whose lives, like their worlds, are also parallel. The tension between them as they struggle to accomplish their task is beautifully realized, heightening readers’ emotional investment with these characters. This is a complex story that takes its time, which may lessen its appeal for readers who need fast-paced plots, but the rewards for staying with the story are well worth it.” VOYA
“Elliott is an attractive and brave farm boy, and Andrew Eiden’s voice is suitably swoon worthy and appealing. Fiona Hardingham’s Madeleine is whimsical and dreamy but also something of a confused teen. When Elliott and Madeleine make contact, their conversation almost echoes with isolation as they talk in limbo between their two worlds. Princess Ko enlists Elliott and the Royal Youth Alliance to rescue her family, abducted from Cello, and Kate Reinders adeptly swings between Ko’s airhead public persona and her actual single-minded intensity. Peter McGowan rounds out the cast with an authoritative tone for the missing royals. Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award.” AudioFile
