If Bridget Jones had two ex-husbands, three children, and invited her entire extended family over for Christmas… It’s December 23, and Clara Dunphy is running around Oxford Street like a chicken with its head cut off trying to pick up “a few last-minute bits and bobs.” Despite the frenzy, the twice-divorced mother of three loves Christmas and always wants to make it perfect—a challenge even in the best of times but particularly when “family” means an extended network of in-laws, out-laws, ex-stepfathers, and hangers-on totaling sixteen. Is the madness of Christmas really worth it? Clara is a witty, blackly funny everywoman who will win over anyone who has ever longed to shut out the holidays with “a giant martini…and some olives.”

“Comfort and Joy, the third novel by India Knight, is in love with Christmas, and all its glorious Technicolor traditions…She writes sensitively and authoritatively about the tracery of emotional tightropes surrounding a festive celebration.” Guardian (Manchester)

“A wickedly funny, painfully honest look at families, festivities, and romantic love.” Marie Claire

Not A Story I Like at Christmas

Too many references to sex and too many characters that you don't get to know or care about. I've decided to not waste any more time and I've stopped listening half way through the first chapter.

Hilarious holiday fun

I laughed out loud many times during this novel. Anne Flosnik’s voice is a little odd, but both the dialogue and narrative passages of this book are great. Despite the chaos, it made me want to go to London for Christmas. I don’t know that I would want to join Clara and her so very dysfunctional family at their yuletide gatherings, but it was certainly fun reading about them and their holiday antics. And good news! You don’t just spend one Christmas with these zany characters. The book is set over the course of several Christmases, so there is plenty of humor and fun.
