Jim Gaffigan never imagined he would have his own kids. Though he grew up in a large Irish-Catholic family, Jim was satisfied with the nomadic, nocturnal life of a standup comedian, and was content to be "that weird uncle who lives in an apartment by himself in New York that everyone in the family speculates about." But all that changed when he married and found out his wife, Jeannie "is someone who gets pregnant looking at babies." Five kids later, the comedian whose riffs on everything from Hot Pockets to Jesus have scored millions of hits on YouTube, started to tweet about the mistakes and victories of his life as a dad. Those tweets struck such a chord that he soon passed the million followers mark. But it turns out 140 characters are not enough to express all the joys and horrors of life with five kids, so he's now sharing it all in Dad Is Fat. From new parents to empty nesters to Jim's twenty-something fans, everyone will recognize their own families in these hilarious takes on everything from cousins ("celebrities for little kids") to growing up in a big family ("I always assumed my father had six children so he could have a sufficient lawn crew") to changing diapers in the middle of the night ("like The Hurt Locker but much more dangerous") to bedtime (aka "Negotiating with Terrorists"). Dad is Fat is sharply observed, explosively funny, and a cry for help from a man who has realized he and his wife are outnumbered in their own home.

Heartwarming and funny

If you like Jim Gaffigan’s comedy (which I do) you will likely like this book. His insights aren’t life-changing, but they are certainly laugh-inducing. His genuine enjoyment of his (many) children shines through and makes this a heartwarming listen. I'm very glad that he reads this himself, as it is hard to imagine another narrator being able to adequately capture his deadpan style.

Some funny moments

Jim Gaffigan’s never been my favorite comedian, but I’d heard from other parents that this book was hilarious. And while there were certainly funny moments most of the book was dull and tiresome. As a parent it will be nothing you haven’t experienced yourself. And Gaffigan spends at least part of every chapter gushing about how much he loves his kids and how amazing his wife is, which obviously is a great thing, but makes for a boring listening. And since he acknowledges that his wife helped him write the book and that he dictated to her at times it starts to seem like he’s kissing up or something. If you can find a 5 minute clip of Gaffigan’s best jokes on YouTube or something you’re better off, and you’ll have all the funny moments of the book in all likelihood.

Gut busting parental truths!!

This novel by comedian and now author Jim Gaffigan is a host of tales outlining what parents think, but never say. It gives expected parents a "woe of humor" to look forward too after having children . This novel proves that even the "Hot pockets" comedian in all of his celebrity is just a regular, caring, and very funny dad.

Truth...It shouldn't be so funny.

At the time of listening to this, my son is five. DAD IS FAT is more than just comedy, it is life. Simply put, a training manual for what is to come if you are planning on having children. I had quite a few moments of laughing uncontrollably. After listening to this, I know I am not alone in the "joys" of fatherhood.

If you have children, listen to this! or even if you don't...

Jim Gaffigan's brand of "clean" humor really strikes a chord with me. I loved that I could listen to this in the presence of my children and not have to fear for their little ears... although they might not have laughed as much as I did. I marked him down one star in the narration field, because his delivery of the material was not quite perfect, you could tell he was reading it. But that didn't matter so much, as the material itself is hilarious. Highly recommended.

A must-listen for parents everywhere

Jim Gaffigan is a funny guy. I probably should have actually read the full book description before buying this book—a decision based solely on the fact that I love his stand-up comedy—but I don’t regret it. I’m sure the material would be funnier and more relatable if I actually had kids, but listening to Gaffigan is fun anyway. There are certain parts that, as a non-parent, weren’t terribly engaging for me, and every once in a while it sounds like he loses his place on the page as he’s reading, but overall this was a worthwhile listen. I most definitely recommend this to any parents out there, but I would also say any Jim Gaffigan fan would get a kick out of this one. The delivery is classic Gaffigan.
