Very pleasantly surprised
- I had some doubts about this series and was I ever wrong.Matt Helm is a great character.Giving a mission he puts blinders on and goes at it. Donald Hamilton writes in a very direct style and doesn't add a hundred pages of BS to the story like so many of today's writers.Highly recommend this series.

Hamilton's writing is a real treat & Matt Helm is possibly his best character. I've enjoyed Rudnicki's narration before too, so listening to this was an absolute treat. Told in the first person from a fairly reliable narrator (Helm is not quite as rational & ruthless as he'd like us to believe.) with plenty of logical action. No miraculous coincidences. Helm is sometimes called the American James Bond, but I think that does the series a disservice. It's far better.
Best of all, both Helm & Hamilton know guns, hiking, boats, & dogs. Hamilton was a freelance writer for many hunting magazines. He wrote "Cruises With Kathleen", his sailboat. When Helm hikes through the desert or a march in Sweden, it's real & it should be. Hamilton wrote almost the same words for hunters in one of his articles. Only the quarry has changed. No stupid 'silencers', rifles that sight themselves in, or ridiculous shotguns either. (In my last review of a mystery-thriller, I said I was going to give the next review that didn't rely on a stupid silencer an extra star just for leaving it out. Unfortunately, I can't.)
Great book & series. I've got all of them & have read them several times. Can't recommend them highly enough.
