New York book editor Maris Matherly-Reed knows a bestseller when she sees one -- even if it is a tantalizing partial manuscript submitted by a writer identified only as P.M.E., with the return address of an obscure island off the Georgia coast. Maris is intrigued enough to search for him. Her trip to Georgia to meet the mysterious author takes her to an eerie, ruined cotton plantation, where Maris finds Parker Evans, a man confined to a wheelchair who carefully hides his past. Coaxing his novel from him chapter by chapter, Maris gets caught up in his tale of two friends who rent a boat with a young woman for a night of sex and drinking. Only one person will return from that trip. Disturbed about her sexual attraction to Parker and worried about her marriage to author and her co-publisher Noah Reed, Maris returns to New York where the delivery of Parker's newest chapters convince her they are more than fiction. She wonders how well she knows her husband and begins a harrowing search for a truth that ties back to a terrifying crime and a will use her, or anyone, to get his revenge. Envy explores the way love and hatred shape lives in a breathtaking story of suspense.

Editorial Reviews

“Jam-packed with twists and turns right up to the shocking finale.”  Cosmopolitan
“Brown stages one dramatic scene after another.”  Publishers Weekly
“Suspenseful and satisfying, Brown’s latest novel is sure to please readers, just as her many previous ones have.”  Booklist
“Victor Slezak’s voice easily changes from that of the author, craggy Parker Evans, to the smooth and aloof publisher, Noah Reed, who both have an old score to settle. His treatment of the vixen and the heroine is equally well done. The characters come to life and are captured in both attitude and demeanor. At the end of the story, the past and the present converge to deliver a satisfying con-clusion.”  AudioFile
“The book-within-a-book plotline of Envy allows this elaborate and enormously intriguing story to unfold on two levels. The storytelling is vintage Sandra Brown and is sure to keep her readers utterly hooked and completely guessing.” RT Book Reviews (4½ stars, Top Pick!)

Brilliant narration of an original and dramatic romantic suspense novel

A novel within a novel - and glimpses of a novel within a novel within a novel! My first Sandra Brown, chosen at random with no preconceptions, and I found it brilliantly atmospheric, and scary and touching by turns. The narration was exceptionally good - flowing, with clearly distinguished voices for the characters, and no awkward jolting errors of emphasis - I hate it when it sounds like the narrator hasn't read to the end of the sentence before starting to speak it, let alone the end of the book.
I read at least 2 audiobooks a week and this is the first time that the narrator's skills have made me look for other examples of his work.
The book's protagonists were credible, mature adults, living with emotional scars and reacting realistically to dramatic events although I felt the book was plot-driven as any suspense story should be. As I have limited patience for character analysis I was glad that the hero and heroine's internal debates and reflections were kept to a minimum - the author explains enough to make their reactions believable, without boring the listener and slowing down the plot. I am now listening to Sandra Brown's other suspense novels and so far I think "Envy" is one of the best. Victor Slezak has narrated most of her recent work.
