Story

An intriguing look at the world of dog rescue.

This is a memoir by actress Sylva Kelegian, and how she got involved with dog rescue, and her experiences over the years of doing it. I am surprised that, being an actress herself, that Ms. Kelegian did not narrate her own book. In any case, Kathe Mazur does a fine job. Her zeal for dog rescue could be overwhelming and even a bit fanatical at times, but it was for excellent reasons. There were times when she needed to step back from it, because it was interfering with other parts of her life. She is honest about her successes, as well as a few failures. She relates a story of one dog that was very sweet and friendly when encountering people outside, but as soon as a stranger came into the house, the dog would attack. The dog was initially brought into the shelter where she volunteered, and she took it home and tried to find a permanent home. After various people tried to adopt the dog, but had to bring it back, and after spending nearly $10,000 on trying to get this dog placed, and expensive, intensive training that really did not do much, and flying it to its new home in another state, she admitted that she would never do that again. There were times I felt angry hearing about how people treat their pets, in terms of neglect and abuse (and, of course, neglect can be a form of abuse). It is mind-boggling that this happens. However, it was great to hear of the success stories of how so many of these dogs found loving, safe homes. This book should appeal to dog lovers (and maybe lovers of other animals), and anyone who is into animal rescue, whether it be dogs or other animals.

Bravo Ms. Kelegian. A debut book that soars.

As an avid listener & narrator of audio books myself, it was the title that first captured my attention...God Spelled Backwards. I had no choice but to purchase what turned out to be a little gem. I love this book, I love the bravery of this woman, it's terrific; compelling & heartbreaking & funny as hell too. I laughed, I cried, I raged against the inane abuses perpetrated against these defenseless animals. Being a new doggie parent, I learned so much from the authors stories - her many lessons to us cleverly disguised but clear as a bell in her narrative; And I grew to love her many charges from their personalities that jumped off the page. Bravo Ms. Kelegian. I look forward to your next book. A must read for animal lovers & for those people who may just be thinking of inviting a dog into their family. - If you choose to listen to the story of this woman's journey & I hope you do, I promise you, you will be transported. It's easy listening with a powerful message.

Dog Rescue

God Spelled Backwards by Sylvia Kelegian becomes a compelling listening experience as read by Kathe Mazur. The author mainly recounts numerous experiences she had in rescuing many, many dogs, almost all with positive, happy endings. Her commitment and determination come through completely, as does her honesty about the burn-out that she came close to experiencing. Despite the title, this is a very down-to-earth account that does not refer to God or Christianity or spirituality, except once in the closing paragraphs. It is therefore a thoroughly human story and definitely uplifting.
