Belfast, 1985. Amid the Troubles, Detective Sean Duffy, a Catholic cop in the Protestant Royal Ulster Constabulary, struggles with burnout as he investigates a brutal double murder and suicide. Did Michael Kelly really shoot his parents at point-blank and then jump off a nearby cliff? A suicide note points to this conclusion, but Duffy suspects even more sinister circumstances. He soon discovers that Kelly was present at a decadent Oxford party where a cabinet minister's daughter died of a heroin overdose, which may or may not have something to do with Kelly's subsequent death. New evidence leads elsewhere: gun runners, arms dealers, the British government, and a rogue American agent with a fake identity. Duffy thinks he's getting somewhere when agents from MI5 show up at his doorstep and try to recruit him, thus taking him off the investigation. Duffy is in it up to his neck, doggedly pursuing a case that may finally prove his undoing.

Another superbly atmospheric and gripping novel from Adrian McKinty
-
I've been a huge fan of Adrian McKinty for years since stumbling on his novels online. This was the first I'd tried in audio form and its even more gripping than the written form.
For those of you who haven't had the pleasure of meeting Inspector Sean Duffy of the RUC I'd urge you to try the novels. Don't start here though as you'll lose out on the development that takes place in the first 3 novels and unusually there are huge spoilers within this about the plots of those books.
All the books are well written, witty and have excellently constructed plots. The use of 1980s Northern Ireland as the setting is excellent and brings home the everyday violence and tension of those days with characteristic British humour.
The narrator, Gerard Doyle is excellent and captures the multiple Irish, Scottish and English accents very well and brings the book to life in a way that wouldn't be possible if you're unfamiliar with how people speak in this part of the world.
If you're hesitant at all about this I wholeheartedly encourage you to give this a go. You won't regret it.

Duffy Scores Again
-
Detective Sean Duffy is again embroiled in the Troubles of Northern Ireland. Not to mention the countless added troubles that author Adrian McKinty thrusts upon our hero.
Duffy is a cop. He’s also a Catholic, a rarity in the ranks of the Protestant-dominant law enforcement community of Belfast in 1985. Which makes him doubly unpopular.
Well aware that he makes an easy target, Duffy starts each day by checking under his car for a bomb. He’s been lucky so far. But he’s still suffered a painful assortment of bullet wounds, broken bones and rocky relationships.
But you gotta love the hard-drinking Duffy. He never allows his superiors’ orders, or multiple dangers, to get in the way of doing his duty. He’s a tough, old-school cop who never looks the other way.
In the detective’s latest adventure, he investigates a possible link between a questionable series of suicides/murders and the theft of missiles from a Northern Ireland factory.
Sean Duffy is brought to life by award-winning narrator Gerard Doyle. British-born Doyle, who has followed Duffy through all his exploits, provides the perfect Irish accent for the hard-core detective. The gruffness, moodiness, anger, pain, and seemingly Scotch-infused speech always hit the mark. Doyle is also expert at delivering distinct and consistent voices to the wide range of characters. A better match of narrator would be highly unlikely for this audiobook series.
Turn on the audiobook, sit back, pour yourself a Duffy-favored Islay Scotch, and root for the good guy. And just maybe McKinty will go easier on him next time.
“I went outside. A filthy-looking cloud hanging over Belfast like an evil djinn. The first raindrops. I checked under the BMW for bombs and got inside. I drove down Coronation Road, past a gaggle of sodden children and an emaciated horse being ridden by Dominic Mulvenna, the malevolent, demon child from the last house on the street. The rain had become a biblical scourge. “
