Hannibal’s uncle, a noted painter, finds him in a Soviet orphanage and brings him to France, where Hannibal will live with his uncle and his uncle’s beautiful and exotic wife, Lady Murasaki. Lady Murasaki helps Hannibal to heal. With her help he flourishes, becoming the youngest person ever admitted to medical school in France. But Hannibal’s demons visit him and torment him. There are images of morbid beauty here.... Harris' handling of the wartime violence is also impressive, as swift and vicious as the blitzkrieg itself. Los Angeles Times
Gripping detail.... [Harris] moves the story along at an impressively fast clip. Boston Globe

I'm SOOO conflicted about this!

Part of the charm of Hannibal Lecter in the first three books (Red Dragon, Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal) was the unknown nature of his evil. The mystery of the man if you will. Thomas Harris tries to deconstruct his character here with the history of the man. I hate to say it, but I don't like that. True, it's HIS character and he can do with it as he pleases, but, if I could go back, I wouldn't have listened to this. My feeling about this is the same as those who complained about the Star Wars prequels("THAT'S NOT HOW IT'S SUPPOSED TO GO!") Alas, this IS how it's supposed to go whether I like it or not. The writing is great, as most of Thomas Harris is. The true shocker was what a good narrator Thomas Harris is... especially for a guy not known for being seen in public or granting interviews. He actually sounds like a seasoned charismatic reader! Do I recommend the book? ... Just barely.
