“An overview of early aviation history…By expanding the scope beyond familiar figures such as the Wright brothers, Goldstone brings the legends behind death-defying acts to life, exploring how competition can lead to innovation….Engaging historical nonfiction.” School Library Journal
“Written as a series of profiles…makes it eminently suited to audio. Robertson Dean offers an engaging narration, altering his voice slightly to match the tone of the text. He’s excited when appropriate and even gravely serious when needed…This is a title for young listeners, but adults will find it engaging and informative AudioFile

A fun glide through aviation's daredevils

For anyone intrigued with aviation and especially the daredevil days of early flying will appreciate Robertson Dean’s reading of this raw story of the pilots that entertained audiences by the thousands with their seemingly impossible feats of flips, rolls, and dives, most of the time pulling up just in time. These are the exploits of courageous men, if not a bit on the crazy or death-wish side, but needing to quench their thirst for adventure with extreme goals. At times it seemed their drive and ambition was out of control, pushing them toward untested feats motivated by fame and fortune. Racing against other planes, trains and automobiles isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but for anyone who enjoys a real life story that allows some escapism into the realm of undaunted drive and nerve, this listen will serve you well.
