Known for roles on the small screen such as Tobias Funke on Arrested Development and the role of David in Mr. Show With Bob And David, as well as a hugely successful stand-up routine full of sharp-tongued rants and rages, David Cross has carved out his place in American comedy. Now, for the first time, Cross is weaving his media mockery, celebrity denunciation, religious commentary, and sheer madness into book form. And as if this wasn’t enough for your laughing pleasure in these troubled times, some of the pieces splinter off with additional material being created online in exclusive video and animated web content created solely for the book. With a mix of personal essays, satirical fiction posing as truth, advice for rich people, information from America’s least favorite rabbi and a top-ten list of top-ten lists, I Drink for a Reason is as unique as the comedian himself, and cannot be missed.

Editorial Reviews

With his comedic background, Cross does well with delivery and emphasis, never hesitating or faltering with the risks he takes. His most entertaining antics deviate from the unabridged text when Cross (rather delightfully) mocks or challenges the conventions of an audiobook, quixotically changing his mind about reading a list and enlisting a band to perform using the list as lyrics. Publishers Weekly
David's writing in this audiobook for the eyes is every bit as funny, honest, and observant as the man himself-and, oddly, twice as smart. It's surprising and funny dot dot dot a triumph! Mitchell Arrested Development Hurwitz, co-creator, The Ellen Show

“Absurdist naysaying deepened by occasional blurts of actual emotion.” Sarah Vowell, New York Times bestselling author of Assassination Vacation
“This ‘arresting’ comedian has ‘developed’ into an amazing and insightful writer.” Mitchell Hurwitz, producer, The Golden Girls
“Honest and brutal, but above all, hilarious.” Simon Pegg
“I Drink for a Reason is much, much more of Cross at his best; a seasoned comic dishing out gobs and gobs of caustic wit against Left, Right, and Middle America. Part memoir and totally outrageous, this book displays the unbridled anarchistic enthusiasm that makes its author such a stand-up favorite.” Barnes & Noble, editorial review
“Cross…is one of the few comedians working today with an easily identifiable comic voice, and his authorial debut ensures that his voice is heard on every page…Cross consistently hits his mark without sounding like a hack…Though he admits inviting the charge of elitism with some of his material, Cross avoids condescending to his demographic while knocking out a steady stream of laugh-out-loud quips.” Publishers Weekly

His most entertaining antics deviate from the unabridged text when Cross (rather delightfully) mocks or challenges the conventions of an audiobook.” Publishers Weekly (audio review)

An audio book with elements that take advantage of the medium

Much of this book is great. Some of it is amazing...bits are eye opening (the ones about Jim Belushi and Larry the Cable Guy specifically) But there are parts of this audio book that ONLY work as an audio book. The first ten minutes could not POSSIBLY come off the same way on page...and it's awesome. There are also asides that David Cross makes to the listener that are specific to the listener and couldn't be made to a reader.

Rants of the Funny Persuasion

A lot of the pieces were fantastic, basically Cross' rants, with a flare of his comedic style thrown in. The best part, though, may have been the opening.
