An epic new trilogy begins—a tie-in for the milestone fiftieth anniversary of Star Trek: The Original Series—that stretches from the earliest voyages of the Starship Enterprise to Captain Kirk’s historic five-year-mission … and from one universe to another. Hidden aboard the USS Enterprise is a secret that has been passed from captain to captain, from Robert April to Christopher Pike to James T. Kirk. Now the return of the enigmatic woman once known as Number One has brought that secret to light, and Kirk and his crew must risk everything to finish a mission that began with April so many years ago. Nearly two decades earlier, April and his crew first visited the planet Usilde, where they found both tragedy and a thorny moral dilemma. Today, the legacy of that fateful occasion will compel Kirk to embark on a risky voyage back to that forbidden world—which is now deep in territory claimed by the Klingon Empire.

Star Trek makes a welcome return to audio

<p>It's been a while since we've had a <i>Star Trek</i> audiobook (novelizations of the two Abrams movies aside), and very few of them have been unabridged. For <i>Star Trek</i>'s 50th anniversary, we're getting a novel trilogy celebrating the original series, and it's also coming to unabridged audio.</p><p>The novel isn't an exhaustive recollection of <i>Star Trek</i>'s greatest hits, as you might expect from an anniversary story. Instead, Greg Cox took us back to Star Trek's roots, giving us a novel about what could have been another mission during the original show. It's well-worn ground, but it's appropriate ground.</p><p>Without going into the details of the plot, I will say that we're introduced to two interesting alien races, in a story that <i>couldn't</i> have been done in later eras.</p><p>Cox's prose is up to his usual form. He has a good handle on all of the characters, and does a good job of recapping for readers who might need it without being overbearing for readers who know the show inside-and-out.</p><p>Overall, the story was fun and interesting, and I look forward to the next volume.</p><p>This is the first book I've listened to with Robert Petkoff narrating. His narration is easy to listen to, and he does a good job of providing distinct voices for all of the characters. I look forward to hearing his performances for the rest of the trilogy.</p>
