From the Nobel Prize–winning author of One Hundred Years of Solitude comes a masterly evocation of an unrequited passion so strong that it binds two people's lives together for more than half a century. In their youth, Florentino Ariza and Fermina Daza fall passionately in love. When Fermina eventually chooses to marry a wealthy, well-born doctor, Florentino is devastated, but he is a romantic. As he rises in his business career, he whiles away the years in 622 affairs—yet he reserves his heart for Fermina. Her husband dies at last, and Florentino purposefully attends the funeral. Fifty years, nine months, and four days after he first declared his love for Fermina, he does so again. With humorous sagacity and consummate craft, Gabriel Garc├¡a M├írquez traces an exceptional half-century of unrequited love. Though it seems never to be conveniently contained, love flows through the novel in many wonderful guises—joyful, melancholy, enriching, and ever surprising.

When Love Comes Calling
- On the surface, this is a story of (un)requited love. But it is the ambling way the story is told and the nuance of word choice that makes the story beautiful. The characters are pretty pitiful, Florentino Ariza who spends his life fawning for his youth, Fermina Daza, an uptight woman who is too stubborn to let love in and chooses a life of stability instead. All the while, she plays head games with her husband and Florentino. And Florentino becomes a philanderer and womanizer who rises to the head of the RCC Riverboat Company. The book is really lovely and deep, even if it is essentially just a love story.

Understand, it's Marquez, not PG...
- I see a lot of negative reviews for this story and they just don't do it justice. Yes, there is the Marquez tendency to overindulge the male ego, but this is still a beautiful story about love lost and regained. About love in the silver years of old age. A man who waits years for his desired love, years for redemption and forgiveness. Armando Duran lends a masterful narration to this story. Each word is like music! You'll fall in love with this classic story. This is still a good listen!
