The scions of a falling house must navigate a world of corporate warfare to maintain their family’s status in the moon’s vicious political atmosphere. The moon wants to kill you—whether it’s being unable to pay your per diem for your allotted food, water, and air, or just getting caught up in a fight between the moon’s ruling corporations, the Five Dragons. You must fight for every inch you want to gain in the moon’s near-feudal society. And that is just what Adriana Corta did. As the leader of the moon’s newest “dragon,” Adriana has wrested control of the moon’s helium-3 industry from the Mackenzie Metal Corporation and fought to earn her family’s new status. Now, at the twilight of her life, Adriana finds her corporation, Corta Helio, surrounded by the many enemies she made during her meteoric rise. If the Corta family is to survive, Adriana’s five children must defend their mother’s empire from her many enemies—and each other.

Soapy Sci-Fi
-
This book was more soap opera than sci-fi. Five families, aristocracies on the moon, a lawless Wild West place with mostly unregulated operations. Over a million and a half people with rampant poverty? On the moon? I’m not buying the premise and am not amused by the society that McDonald has created. He’s taken some of the poorest and least space capable societies, put them on the moon, and made them empires?
Seriously, I had very little to no sympathy for the Cortas, the main characters. I also found it difficult to believe that the shamanistic and macho cultures of Brazil and Ghana would ever take hold in such a strong way considering the moon bases were built and populated by engineers and scientists, typically the very same people who disdain such superstitions and steer toward Atheism.
And what’s with nearly all the technology being current tech yet the book is set nearly 100 years in the future? So unimaginative. And why, oh, why does the author think even for a second that such extreme mining operations would be deployed to acquire Helium 3 for power production, when panels could be installed in orbit around Earth to collect it freely and passively for a fraction of the cost? The only redeeming factor of this book is the fluid sexuality and genders of the moon’s inhabitants. If you like writers like Ben Bova, you’ll enjoy this book. But if, like me, you demand more imagination and forward technological thinking from sci-fi authors, you’ll see this book for what it is: a space opera that tries to sound scientifically smart.
The narration was good. I enjoyed the voicing choices and pacing. Although I agree in principle with casting three readers for this book, it may have been a bit disconnected when it came to the very small sections of Marina’s parts. Of course, this was a tough casting choice as the parts read by Suzanne Torren were significant enough and her read is stellar enough to make the call so worth it. Ultimately, I blame McDonald for changing to Marina’s perspective so little that he probably should not have done so at all.

My first Sci Fi
-
I enjoyed this warring family saga. The Sci Fi aspect was interesting and not too incredible. It seems primed to become a series - I may read the sequel.
The narration is Ok, apart from the Australian accents.
