Edgar Allan Poe is the undisputed originator of the detective story. His brilliant, imaginative sleuth C. Auguste Dupin set the stage for eccentric, logic wielding investigators like Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot. This audio collection of Poe’s three Dupin stories also includes one non-Dupin detective tale, “Thou Art the Man.” It features celebrity narrator Bronson Pinchot. The story titles are: “The Murders in the Rue Morgue,” “The Mystery of Marie Rogêt,” “The Purloined Letter,” and “Thou Art the Man.”

Rue Morgue is well enough in it's way as a mystery.
I tried very hard to like--and to follow--the meanderings of logic that make up 99% of The Murder of Marie Roget.
Purloined Letter really is the classic everybody says it is, and very well performed here.
Thou Art the Man, though not a Dupin story, was perhaps my favorite--if for no other reason that it was completely new to me. The problem was, at the very moment the murderer is confronted with the evidence of his crime, the recording skips to AFTER the evidence is produced and the confession heard. Had to go to an online source for the paragraph-and-a-half-or-so that was missing.
Speaking of production lapses, all three Dupin stories are marred by a brief, annoying distortion that occurs once in the middle of each tale.
Bronson Pinchot, one of my favorite narrators, especially for stories like these--be sure to catch his reading of Patricia Highsmith's Strangers on a Train--falls short here, ironically due to his own excellence. His French accent is wonderful, but so rich that words are lost, making it hard to follow all of Dupin's excruciating convolutions of logic.
