Introduction by Anna Quindlen Commentary by Margaret Oliphant, George Saintsbury, Mark Twain, A. C. Bradley, Walter A. Raleigh, and Virginia Woolf   Nominated as one of America’s best-loved novels by PBS’s The Great American Read “It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.” So begins Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen’s witty comedy of manners—one of the most popular novels of all time—that features splendidly civilized sparring between the proud Mr. Darcy and the prejudiced Elizabeth Bennet as they play out their spirited courtship in a series of eighteenth-century drawing-room intrigues. Renowned literary critic and historian George Saintsbury in 1894 declared it the “most perfect, the most characteristic, the most eminently quintessential of its author’s works,” and Eudora Welty in the twentieth century described it as “irresistible and as nearly flawless as any fiction could be.”   Includes a Modern Library Reading Group Guide

Superb story brought to life with superb narration...

Pride and Prejudice is my favorite Jane Austen book. The narrator, Kate Reading, is one of my favorite narrators. Kate brought Jane Austen's story to life in the best audio version I have heard. So many portrayals of Jane's mother and younger sisters (in film and audiobooks) make them annoying, like nails on a chalkboard, lessening my enjoyment of the story. Kate renders them so you listen to what they DO and don't dislike them based on how they SOUND. In other words, the difficult or irritating characters in the story are less irritating so you can fully enjoy the magic of the love story between Darcy and Elizabeth. And that's why you listen and adore Pride and Prejudice, the perfectly woven love story, this is what makes it a classic you'll read and/or listen to for a lifetime.

Jane Austen (1775–1817) is considered by many scholars to be the first great woman novelist. Born in Steventon, England, she later moved to Bath and began to write for her own and her family’s amusement. Her novels, set in her own English countryside, depict the daily lives of provincial middle-class families with wry observation, a delicate irony, and a good-humored wit.
