A tale of dark secrets, deep love, and dangerous magic! Since childhood, Sabriel has lived outside the walls of the Old Kingdom, away from the random power of Free Magic, and away from the Dead who refuse to stay dead. But now her father, the Charter-Mage Abhorsen, is missing, and to find him Sabriel must cross back into that world. With Mogget, whose feline form hides a powerful, perhaps malevolent spirit, and Touchstone, a young Charter Mage, Sabriel travels deep into the Old Kingdom. There she confronts an evil that threatens much more than her life--and comes face-to-face with her own hidden destiny.

Obsessed with Garth Nix and Tim Curry

I truly love this entire series, and must confess to having read and listened to each one multiple times now. I started with reading the paperback of Lirael -- a gift from a friend. I was so hungry for more that I downloaded the audiobook of Abhorsen, and then moved onto this first one -- Sabriel. I have gone back and forth between the print and audio and can honestly say that the audio is spectacular. Tim Curry brings the characters to life in a way that I don't know anyone else could. What is particularly special about this first book in the series is our introduction to the cat-creature Moggett. I could not return to the print versions and read Moggett's lines without actually hearing Tim Curry's half-growling, half-purring, half-hissing voices for him. And this was truly a good thing. The story is three-dimensional to me because I have had a chance to hear and read it. I truly believe that any fan of Garth Nix would be delighted to have this audiobook, and may even listen to it again and again as I expect I will.

Sabriel is a beautiful character, and I believe her story is very much suited to the teenage reader...but as an adult, I enjoy losing myself in her journey from innocent young woman to powerful Abhorsen. The injection of romance into this first book is done delicately and is very sweet. I enjoy Garth Nix's way of returning to serious matters even as he acknowledges the human desire for companionship, closeness, and intimacy. In the world he has created, there is very little time for playfulness. Even so, we are periodically reminded that the underlying reason for the struggle is to protect that which we love and cherish...whether it is a newly discovered romance or the half-unappreciated affection we feel for a psychotic cat-creature with extraordinary powers.
