Captain Cordelia Naismith of the Betan Expeditionary Force was on a routine mission to study the life forms on an uninhabited, neutral planet. Little did she know that the enemy Barrayarans had chosen this place as their secret base for an as-yet undeclared war. Separated from her team, Cordelia is captured by Lord Aral Vorkosigan, the leader in charge of the Barrayaran mission. Aral himself is caught in a web of political intrigue that has led to a recent attempt on his life. As the two strangers struggle together across the unfriendly terrain of the foreign planet toward Aral’s ship, they discover that their greatest danger may be the romance inconveniently developing between them, on the brink of a war that will divide their peoples more strongly than ever. Recognized as the current exemplar of character-based science fiction, Bujold debuts her beloved Vorkosigan saga with this tale about the future parents of Miles Vorkosigan.

...
- A great start - poor middle - decent ending... It's a good starting point for what I hope will be an unforgettable saga.

Good story, didn't like the narration
-
Of the narrators I've heard until now, Grover Gardner's voice is the one I like least. His deep voice is even more ill fitting when narrating a story from a woman's point of view. That is not to say that his narration is bad, but for me it was the down side of this story. Still, I enjoyed the story, and bought the sequel, also narrated by Mr. Gardner.
I came to the story not knowing what to expect. It's my first Bujold and all I gathered was that it was a love story. What I didn't know what how complex and packed with action and twists this story was. It definitely kept me at the edge of my (car) seat. I liked that the main characters were very likeable, both good people and competent, and even though they go through quite a few not very nice situations the general tone was optimistic.

Great book to start the series
- Although this was not my first book in this saga (actually my second), I wish I would have started with this one in the beginning. Great writing, great story, comedy, quasi drama, and plot.
