Long Shot and I Had a Hammer were New York Times bestsellers. After receiving a bachelor’s degree in journalism at the University of Missouri, he was a sportswriter for the Anderson Independent in South Carolina, a general-interest columnist at the Clarion-Ledger in Jackson, Mississippi, a sports and features reporter for the Enquirer, and a sportswriter and columnist for the Cincinnati Post.
