Sir Francis Bacon (1561–1626) was an English philosopher, statesman, scientist, lawyer, jurist, author, and father of the scientific method. His works established and popularized inductive methodologies for scientific inquiry, often called the Baconian method or, simply, the scientific method, which still surrounds conceptions of proper methodology today. He was knighted in 1603. He is best known in the field of literature for his Essays. His Essays and other writings mark him as a master of English prose.
