Ten years ago, six-year-old Catalina Mateo hid under the porch of her family home while a knife butchered her mother and a bullet killed her father. Now a rough-sleeping orphan, Cat arrives at the house of Detective Jonathan Stride, pleading for protection. Drenched in the icy waters of Lake Superior, she claims to have narrowly escaped a cold-blooded killer. Stride's raw instinct is to protect Cat, whose late parents' case—and his personal guilt associated with it—still sends a shiver down his spine. As a result, he takes the troubled teenager under his wing. But Stride's partner, Maggie Bei, is not convinced. She doubts the sincerity of this beautiful young streetwalker who has so easily won Stride's trust, and now sleeps in his house with a butcher's knife under her pillow. As Stride continues to care for Cat, Maggie's suspicions solidify, and a single question occupies the void between them: Should Stride be afraid for, or of, this terribly damaged girl?

But Stride's partner, Maggie Bei, is not convinced. She doubts the sincerity of this beautiful young streetwalker who has so easily won Stride's trust, and now sleeps in his house with a butcher's knife under her pillow.

As Stride continues to care for Cat, Maggie's suspicions solidify, and a single question occupies the void between them: Should Stride be afraid for, or of, this terribly damaged girl?

Editorial Reviews

Editorial Reviews

“A masterpiece of psychological suspense.” Lisa Gardner, #1 New York Times bestselling author
“A dark and disturbing story with a nerve-shredding climax that’s as good as Spilled Blood, one of the best American thrillers of 2012.” Evening Telegraph (Peterborough)
“Masterfully plotted…Freeman shows how those endless North Shore winters have toughened and aged Stride, closing him off from the world, but the author also convincingly makes Stride break out of his icy, self-imposed shell.” Publishers Weekly (starred review)
“Back off, Nordic noir. For sheer wintry relentlessness and icebound desolation, the various Scandinavian settings now fashionable in thrillers cannot compete with the decaying shipping and mining city of Duluth, Minnesota…The narrative moves between the point of view of Stride and that of the girl’s pursuer, making this well-plotted, atmospheric thriller feel like a high-stakes chess game.” Booklist

Freeman delivers again!

This marks best selling writer Brian Freeman’s 6th book featuring Detective Jonathan Stride, and once again proves his worthiness as a best selling author. Here, Stride is thrust into a bizarre series of events with his fellow cops in trying to unravel why after ten years, a once 6 year old is now on his doorstep, pleading with what any 16 year old is capable of, lots of emotion. Yes, she witnessed the murder of her mother by her father, then the suicide of the father. Now, someone is trying to kill her. Here is a solid mystery dotted with impressive characters dealing with a troubled past that will keep you on the edge of your proverbial seat. The impeccable talent of Joe Barrett renders the story even more viable with his always satisfying narration. – Odin Roark
